I have a very old Rambo Original Turnout rug (green with red binding), does anyone know what weight this would be? I think it's 300g +. I inherited it with previous horse and have never really used it but it may soon be coming out of retirement!
Also it doesn't have a tail flap, how important are these and does anyone know how easy or not it would be to get one fitted?
Thanks all!

One of my old t/o's is tail flap less (it got pulled off). I use it as a spare, but I haven't noticed a real difference as it used to blow inside out as soon as there was a bit of wind any way.
My weatherbeeta t/o has got a big tail flap, that tucks in when there is wind, and it does keep her bum a bit drier in driving rain.
I wouldn't have thought it would be that hard for a rug repairer to fit one, it's just sewing on an extra flap of material.

Thanks, my main worry was the rain would blow under the back of the rug so wondered if it actually happened! I have a Landa with the big tail flap also, like them a lot!

Well, are you sure the tail flap wasnt just pulled off? I had a horse in the past who liked nothing more than pulling the tail flaps off other horses rugs

As someone else said, it should be relatively easy to have one put back on. My main concern without a decent tail flap is that the wind can blow inside the rug (although a fillet string under the tail and / or leg straps will minimise the rug actually blowing inside out).

She only gets rain blown under when it is really pouring down, and in driving rain and she's stood out in it all day...From what I can remember it's only the last few inches of her hindquarters that get wet.
I think the horseware ones are so well made, and last for such a long time, that it should be fine as it is.
It's only fairly recently (in the grand scheme of things!) that tail flaps started getting added as standard.

Pretty sure it was made that way, the binding goes all the way round with no tears or gaps etc?! I have had rug for 8 years, and it wasn't new when I got it, so fairly old version!

Will ring around local saddleries and get one fitted I think

I had one the same with no tail flap but you could just make out the pinpricks where the stitching had been. Is it a whitish cotton lining or a green nylon lining, that will give you a better clue how old it is? I have some that are 10 years old and still going strong; if I was ever well off I'd still buy the same, they are brilliant and they don't seem to blow up without a flap either but a saddler would soon stitch one on for you if you were desperate to have one.
