For the last few winters my horse has developed a slight cough although I've never heard him before this year, just seen a lump of goo on the floor outside his stable. It's never bothered him and until now just keeping his bed extra clean as worked to get rid of it.
The last couple of weeks he's coughed once or twice a day while I've been with him but it's been dry, no mucus apart from some being on the floor once or twice in the mornings.
The other day there was a fair bit of it in his stable and a huge bit stuck to the wall where he'd coughed some up (grim, I know) so the last few nights he's been out, not even been into the barn apart from walking through to get to a different field. He's had a small haynet at night but in open areas in case the dust is bothering him. He's coughed more today than ever and all I did was feed him his dinner and walk him back to the field.
We've done fast hacks in the last week where he didn't cough apart from once while walking to cool down and once walking back to his field. I'm at a bit of a loss what's causing it and was wondering if any of the supliments are any good like equine america ventilate?

Your horse is regularly yacking up mucus, get the vet out, when you see some gunk scrape it up to give to the vet to be tested. In the first instance he will probably prescribe a course of antibiotics to try and shift the c*** your horse has been yacking up, and exercise is also always good to get the lungs working at their best capacity, build the lungs up to strengthen them in order that they can shift the gunk... The best supplement to break up the gunk you can get is sputolosin but again, that's going to cost you a vet visit. Personally I don't think you should have waited 'years' on this, but I hope you call the vet now its becoming worse.

I would get vet out, and would in the meantime if you can take him off the hay, otherwise make sure it's well soaked. If its a creamy glue like consistency of gunk I would suspect its something like COPD or whatever they call it now A** ( can't remember). If its been on-going for a long time then vet will probably prescribe something like Ventipulmin.

Short term best thing is to keep horse out on grass and off hay ( soak if this isn't an option) and call vet.

Good luck
