I've not been able to find a pic of a German hackamore fitted on a horse. I notice they have a chain under the chin instead of a strap (like English hackamores) Could they take a strap instead?
Just curious!

Have a couple of pics from GYS of rob riding mac in GHM. Now this was used with snaffle, and I know very little about how it was ensembled,no chains though. the horse was very light in it, compared to his usual "head down" tactic. Not sure how useful the pics are at that angle.

Do you mean with a chain or with a bit? Actually I don't know! I've seen them fitted here on their own which presumably is how they were designed to be worn, but I'm sure I've seen a german rider use one with a bit too. All the pics on Google show them with a chain.
NOW I'm wondering whether the combination of a hackamore and snaffle might not be to somehow imitate the action of a myler combination bit (although TBH I only have a very superficial understanding of how they work)

Yes german hackamores are fitted with a chain-many people either take them off and put on a leather strap or put a furry noseband on the chain.

Well yes this is what Tez explained it as when I asked, mac needed something in his mouth but they didnt want him becoming any less responsive with a more servere bit, so it was thought that by just putting a rubber snaffle in with a GHM would be kinder than a myler combo mouthpiece, but with more action coming from the GHM. Im like you, my understanding of the Myler combo is very limited.

Some english hackamores also come with a chain instead of a strap. It is personal preference to whether you use a chain or strap, and obviously how resoonsive the horse is to either, similar to using a leather or chain curb on a pelham/double etc. The action of a snaffle/hackamore would basically have the action on the poll/noseband coming from the hackamore, without any more than a rubber snaffle pressure being put on the mouth, if that makes sense!?
Would differ from a combo bit as that acts on the nose, poll, then the curb then the mouth in roughly that order, whereas the combination as shown by Rosiie would have everything working together, instead of sequence, but obviously only ever as strong as the hands were asking it to be, if that makes sense!???
