Just interested really due to conversation between my partner and I. A new horse arrives at yard where you livery. This horse looks unwell in arrival. If your horse caught illness would you expect them to contribute to vet bills if it was proven new horse caused it? Or would you expect "oh well that's horses for you"

Would it make any difference if new horse had not been vetted?

What if it was a serious illness would that make any difference?

I have no vested interest it was just a take in a similar situation I encountered 5 years ago but with ringworm which meant costly treatment and no competing for 3 months (showing) just wondered what usually expected in such situations

At any yard I've been at any new horse is quarantined. However if I did get in that situation I think it would depend on the owner. Novice owner then I'd be more forgiving as probably duped by seller. Experienced owner ? I'd be annoyed as should know better.

if it was an insurance jobby then no as they are paying although half of excess would be nice

if it was a couple of hundred and insurance wasnt involved i would be angry and i would want them to pay half but then also the yard owner/manager should have noticed it was ill on arrival so i would at least want them to contribute a bit but im doubtful they ever would so would end up paying anyway but in an ideal world they should pay half really :)

I'd expect a mangy looking horse turning up at a livery yard to be quarantined by the YO until it was given the all clear.

I would want to be on a yard with a proper quarantine/introduce one to try and reduce the chance of this happening otherwise there is not much you can do! My horse got injured from a new horse and required stitches but they refused to pay as they said it could have been any of the other 2 horses in the field that he had been with for a year with no injuries. I suppose its the same as a diseased horse there is no proof that yours hasn't picked up the illness from a show it may have been to and given it to the new horse so no one could be blamed! Bit rubbish I know and some owners are nice enough to pay but I don't think you would have a leg to stand on "legally" :)

Ok interesting, what if YO was on holiday in Greece when newbie arrived? So didn't know of its condition and new purchase was unplanned.

Is just like to point out that I got nothing when this happened to me years ago and I had to eradicate a large brand new hemp bed id spent 40 pounds laying and lost over 200 in treatment and entry fees.

If the YO want there I would expect them to have someone responsible with the same ethics as said YO running the place. I think this is a discussion that is never going to have a right or wrong answer ?

Agree with the above - YO should have a YM/equivalent for when they are on hols. I wouldn't expect a YO to come back from hols to find a surprise new horse on the premises that no staff had seen.

The arrangements for quarantine/individual turnout etc should be part of yard rules/contract and if owners agree to those then cross-infection is bad luck.

I'd only expect YO or new owner to contribute if either staff or owner hadn't followed the rules.

Oh totally carefreegirl! I agree. I was thinking about heading over to leominster sales but OH had said he had heard rumours of strangles and that he would feel hideously guilty if we brought illness to the yard!
