My Irish draught mare has come up with a rather solid lump in the indent of her hock. It isn't effecting her work but i want to carry on showing her (if the lump goes that is). Anyone got any suggestions?

Our pony has got a fluidy lump on the outside of both knees, sometimes it can be very squashy sometimes harder. We had him to the vets year before last who said it is just fluid (a bit like a type of windgall). He drained it but unfortunately it came back within about 5 months. They do not effect him in any way, he is never lame, there is never any heat.
We still show him, it depends on which judge you have, some are horrified some seem to just overlook it as he is super quality and huge moving.
We have tried everything, makes no difference.
I have never come across anyone's pony with the same thing :(

Switchthehorse, does your have them on hocks or knees?
I think hocks are fairly common, ours just had to have them on his knees to be different ;)
Wish they were on his hocks, they would be easier to disguise with his enormous tail :)

He certainly is special :biggrin3:
Next time he stands on a big section of his tail and pulls it out I'll save it for you ;)

Could it be a capped hock? - is it a fluidy lump. If it is you can have them drained by your vet but, the fluid usually returns. One of my old horses had a capped hock , as soon as it appeared I cold hosed this helped the swelling to go down a bit. He got it from trauma to the hock and we probably think it was when he lay down or got up on a concrete floor - thats why I always have rubber matting on the stable floor despite a deep bed! It is usually completely cosmetic but, you will usually lose marks for confirmation at county level showing but, I don't think its at all fair - unfortunately his wasn't cosmetic and he became lame when he was worked harder.
