This is the first time I have had to post about Beano

Last Friday he developed a rash, I didn't think much of it at the time and he didn't seem bothered so just kept an eye on it. It’s over his neck/sides/flanks/between his back legs.

By the beginning of the week it still hadn't gone and he was getting more irritable with it so we phoned the vet (Tuesday), who came out on Wednesday and gave him a corticosteroid injection and said he didn't know what could have caused it.

By Thursday it still hadn't gone, the injection hadn't made any difference so I phoned the vet again and we have decided to cut out all his feed bar his chaff (Alfa A Lite), change his bedding, change to a new bale of hay and see if this makes any difference. Failing that, he will have skin tests/biopsies next week.

I have two questions:

1) Any ideas what could have caused this? Nothing in his feed or management has changed, he is on same bedding, feed, hay as always. It is also a month after Toff had her really strange reaction....(post about it around the 2nd June) His routine hasn't changed either (in during day, out at night)

2) Any ideas on how we can make him more comfortable? He is quite grumpy when we try and hose him, usually he loves it. We have wonder gel, tea tree oil sprays etc.

Any ideas?

Could he have eaten something that he doesn't normally? Mine came down with a strange rash a couple of years ago from eating rosehips we think

I have been round their field and can't find anything unusual....but if he ate something there wouldn't be anything to find! lol! It is most perculiar

Nope, use home made fly spray with no ill effects. Have even stopped using that now too, have completely stopped everything to see, no change yet though.....
 
does the field have buttercups or stinging nettles? also wat colour is your horse? oh and do you have ticks in your field. look closely to the bumps have heads? and wat is your bedding?

B had something simialar a while back. I thought it may have been a barley alergy so took him of all barley and it went. He still dosent have barley, but he can get a small rash if i change his food ... he is a sensitive soul apparently!

I have PM,d you, can i just add that a biopsy will only tell you if its an allergy or an infection and the blood allergy test is a waste of money, but its your choice.

My horse had a similar thing a few months ago i had left him away from home for schooling and he came back with a rash which my other horse caught even though they don't have any contact or share anything i always made sure i washed my hands etc Not sure what caused it and after various treatments my vet gave me steroid spray which cleared it up.
 
I had a horse who suffered terribly with hives that just appeared one day and got so bad that they all merged into one. Had to do all the allergy tests but all to no avail. He had to remain on prednisalone tablets for quite a while. Found the only way to stop him getting affected was to keep him covered in a good fly rug or lightweight summer rug with neck cover depending on the weather. Good luck!
