Random run away horse!!?

My horse has always been known as 'quirky' with a funny personality but he's been almost normal for the last 6 months until this week!!

I went to take him to the field the other day so he plodded down in 'donkey mode' and then like a flash he spins around and galloped back to his stable, so i went and got him, found him rolling in his bed (He loves his bed!) and took him back out, donkey mode again but i was paying attention this time but he spun and no way can i hold him so off i went to collect him again!! Chifney on and got him into his field! I didn't think too much of it as it was a frosty morning and he loves being in his stable so just put his chifney on to take him out so he can't get away if he tried - which he doesnt try when he has his chifney in!

So on Saturday, we went competing and he was a star....until i untacked him, put his travel rug on and dad held him whilst i put his travel boots on, went to put the last boot on and he just ran away!! Obviously dad wasn't prepared for him to run away and wouldnt of held him anyway so off he went towards the indoor arena!! I have no idea why he would do this because he had no need to run away!!

I will always lead him out in a chifney now but can't keep him in one at all times just in case! I thought he ran back to his bed from the field but at a show is weird!! x

Any thoughts?
 
No real advice but my ex racer used to do it ... one minute happily stood tied up, the next he'd just bolt - ripping his headcollar once and bronching down the field ... very random as there was just 'no reason' for him to do it? He went one step too far recently and bolted through fencing, a garden, down a dip, through another garden and off a 15 ft drop into someones back yard ... just be careful :(
 
Oh gosh that sounds awful! He doesnt so much as bolt, he sort of pulls away and trots off happily!! I don't think he'd jump anything or go anywhere with too much effort but I want to stop him before it could get worse! Maybe have to keep him in a chifney or 'be nice' halter for a while. Not worth risking him getting hurt or hurting anyone. There isn't a way of punishing him really other than taking him back again, if i smack him he might not let me catch him again once i catch up!!

Clearly enjoying himself at the show and didn't want to go home. My daughter used to ride a SecA that was fab to load and unload we spent ages practising - till one day we went to a show and she had a great time but wouldn't load to come home. For ever after she would only load to go home from a show if you clipped the lorry ties on to the side of the trailer, and unravelled them till she could see you wave the end - then she walked on (otherwise she knew they'd be crossed and under her bum and she'd be loaded manually!)
 
could he have just wanted to be indoors again? sounds stupid but you said he got away from you and then galloped back to his stable where you found him rolling then at the show he was heading towards the indoor. was it raining or windy or anything else like that?
 
I guess its possible!! x A lady caught him on his way to the indoor, there are also fields that way but luckily he didnt get that far and i'm 90% sure he'd go to the indoor as he knows the way, he hasnt been to the fields there before and secondly he doesnt like being in a field!! It had been raining but it wasn't at the time (or not noticably anyway) and it wasn't windy, just dark as it was about half 5 in the evening.
