Well basically i am a bit dissapointed at 2 girls that go to the same livery i keep my horse at. they are both 12/13 year old, for the story i will call them girl 1 and girl2, so girl 1 doesnt have a pony but goes to riding school, and girl 2 does have a pony. I know girl 1 personally because i look after her and her sister at least once a week, her family are friends with mine and i used to take her to the yard and let her ride my horse on the lead rein and groom ect. before she started riding school. When she came to the yard with me she made friends with girl 2 and the pair began going out on girl 2's pony quite regular which is great. Plus, girl 2 loans the same pony i loaned for 3 years and learnt to ride when i was around the same age. Shes a cracking pony and i got her when i was 9/10 when she was really fat and just recovered from laminitis (so i had been told). So as she became fitter i became more experience and became very attached. Unfortunatley i grew out of her but she remained at the same yard and has been passed down to other girls. Eventually girl 2 got her and had her in great shape and took good care of her. But since entering her teens has been a bit careless,i hate to intervene as its her pony now, but i give her a little telling off a few weeks ago because straight after coming back from a hack she fed her and turned her out, no brush or anything, all took less than 5 minutes, so i advised her that she needs to make sure the pony is cool before dinner and that if not brushed regular can cause sores, but all she had to say was she wasnt sweaty even though the pony had a saddle and girth patch from sweating. But what really got my knickers in a twist was that this weekend gone girl 1 and girl 2 went on a very loonnngg ride (around 6 hours), now theres nothing wrong with a long hack but not in the scortching heat as most of you's probably experienced at the weekend. they rode all the way to a neighbouring village which is 6 miles away, plus half way back to the yard, they realised girl 1 had lost her phone, and rode back to the neighbouring village and then started to go back home again. i had girl 1's mam at my house frantic about her daughter and all sorts. I wasnt at the yard when they got back but all they had to say when i asked what they were playing at was they only did a few canters and trots and the pony wasnt sweaty, im sorry but ive never heard of a horse going out that long in that kind of heat and not being sweaty. Im worried that they didnt cool her properly and rushed so they didnt get in trouble for being back so late. I just hope the pony is fine as shes getting old and her legs arnt what they used to be. Am i over reacting ?because i know youngins' can make silly mistakes, whats your thoughts?

sorry rant over....needed to get it out of my system!!

They are being a bit thoughtless, but to be honest it isn't really that bad. Having a word and reminding them is all you can do really. Maybe mention it to the parents and/or YO if you think they might listen to them more. I guess you aren't significantly older than them so someone older might have more clout.

^^ I agree with the above, although to scare them into acting more responsibly I'd either tell them anymore of it and your telling the owner, or voice your concerns to Girl 2's parents.

In my opinion kids that young shouldn't be left up the yard alone.

think you are being rather over the top to be honest...people often ride long distance on pleasure rides and if they mainly walked there is no reason the pony should sweat up too much.....id tend to say concentrate on your horse :) but then thats yards for you ;)

I think you are over reacting a bit, you can always just say, make sure you and pony have plenty to drink.

I used to go out on my pony all day in summer when I was around the same age!! Literally used my pony like a motorbike lol, he never came to any harm.

TBH, I probably did things like that when I was a kid - and I'm sure I wouldn't have walked hardly at all! I would tell the one girls' parents with the pony in a nice way about it too :)

ah well, i must be over reacting i just worry due to it being a pony i loved and her being old. i know that people go on long rides all the time, just the pony doesnt usually go out that long; bit plod in the woods for an hour n a bit 3 to 5 times a week. I didnt shout and ball at them i just advised, and the YO and girl2's mam wasnt too impressed. But like you said, there kids having fun and didnt mean harm. Thanks for your opinions!
