Rant how tall are you and how bigs your horse

im looking for a new horses im 5ft 4 and tryed a 16.1 16.3 and the horses i have are 15.2 tb and 16.3 tb who iv been winning on showing,our yard owner likes to stick her noise in and shouted at me saying i DO NOT need anything bigger than 15.2 because it will be too big in our option isnt it what the horse is like to how safe your feel.

should i not be allowed to buy a 16.3 if i think its right for me because she thinks 15.2 is better, any short ppl ride big horses
 
Tell her to bog off and mind her own business.

One of our horses is 17.2 hh and i'm 5ft 3 tall...how would she like THAT? We used to compete all the time till he was semi-retired....

Tell her to talk to me, I'd gladly tell her to stick her opinion where it counts, done it many times, but not for a while, as everyone round this area has learnt the hard way about sticking their oar into my business!

I'm 5'2" and have a 14.3hh. I had a 15.3hh before him and felt over horsed as she was big and strong but then I have also ridden my friends 16.3hh Gelderlander and felt fine. Its personal preference and each horse rides differently. I only keep to smaller horses now so I can reach to tack up and handle them, not fun having to drag a set of steps out to brush a mane or put a saddle on!!
 
thats what i would of though my 15.2 who i evented was great but i more confident on a bigger horse xc. she had me in tears at end of day if i pay my livery why should she tell me what i can and cant have

Please don't get upset, its none of her business, get what makes you happy. x
 
i'm 5'8" and ride a 17.2hh, when i first got him i weighed less than 8 stone, i had people telling me that i wouldn't be able to get on him as he's so big and when i'm on him he wouldn't feel me there so would be dangerous. stupid people and i told them so, i've done more with my gentle giant than they have with their smaller horses, they are too scared of their horses!

my kids ride my horse and they look like peas on a mountain on him but he's kind and looks after them. my eldest rides my horse a fair bit in the arena on his own (i am there watching but don't lead him or anything), my horse knows he's on him and is very careful.
it depends on the build of the horse as well, i also had a 14.2hh mare and she rode bigger than my 17.2hh does, i didn't feel out of place on her and she took up my leg.

it's your money, your choice so don't listen to anyone about what height to get.

Thanks your so right bear in mind in 27 and soft she just over powers me and yes you may get a big horse thats a loon but same with smaller ones, i cant tell her to butt out as much as i would like to becuase she would kick me off
 
I only have ponies now (I am only 5ft so am well suited to ponies) and they have many advantages over bigger animals, they're cheaper to feed, easier to deal with, etc. But in the past I bought the best I could afford on a small budget, or rode what was available, size didn't really come into it! When I was 14/15 I often rode a 16.3 TB, 'cause that was what was available for me to ride at the time.

Buy what you like, it's no one's decision but yours!
 
I'm 5'4"

First horse 16.1 - easy to ride, strong but easy to get into a nice frame

Second Horse - 17hh huge boy I look like a pea on a drum, but you could ride him on 2 pieces of cotton he is that kind, he is harder for me to put together, it takes alot of transitions, but when he's off the leg and into the contact you could canter him on the spot.

Third horse - 17.1hh tall wandy girl warmblood but built like a TB very easy to put together, floats and has such a big movement but I did look like a pea on a drum, but never felt it

Fourth Horse - 16hh TB mare I look right on her, and she has such a big swinging movement (easily mistaken for a WB) that she feels the same as the third horse

So I'd say its really down to how they move rather than how actually big they are, some smaller ones have a bigger walk than some taller one's and vice versa, I'd go for movement every time, if you found a 15.2 that moved like Valegro I'm sure you wouldn't walk away!

She's obviously power-mad, being her yard and all that....

Tell her thanks, but you will chose whatever horse you want......

ride whatever you like but remember that...
smaller horses are usually no less talented (quite the reverse in many cases), cost less to feed, are often sounder (lighter weight bodies on the same sort of size legs, according to my vet), are usually nimbler and cleverer at their fences, you can get more of your leg around them to keep them engaged and straight (tiny riders on big horses going beautifully are usually deceptively brilliant riders imho!) and it's easier to tack them up if you're short. i'm 5'10" but have seen 5'4" riders really struggle to lift saddles onto big horses.
also, remember that big horses should feel small and small horses should feel big (depends on stride length and balance) if they're any good imho! good luck in your search.

Totally agree, especially re. the soundness!
 
First off tell her to mind her own business. You buy the horse that you feel is right for you. As long as you dont feel over horsed or the horse is too strong etc then you are fine.

I'm 5'2 and have a 15.2tb my last horse was a 15.3warmblood. But I ride a 17hh horse at the yard for a friend. I look like a pea on a mountain on him. He can be a bit of a s*** sometimes but I'm more confident that the friend who owns it so when they unable to ride I take it out.

(ignore my position.. i am working on it!! and my stirrups are at jumping length too :D )
 
im 5.0 and used to ride a 18+hh horse to learn to do dressage i really didnt like riding him cause he was so big but he was just the biggest softy and a horse that i felt 100% safe on and i learnt alot from him. Now though i dont really look for anything over 16hh.
 
Of course you can choose whatever size horse you like, it's your busuines , no one else's.

But why do you need/want a bigger horse if you're doing well with the one you've got?
 
I 5'3" (just!) and my horse is a rather large and stocky 16.2h Irish...youd expect him to be as strong as they come but hes not at all, whereas our other Irish is in a gag and still rips your arms off. Just goes to show size/build/breed doesnt matter, its all down to the horse. Granted putting on a saddle is a bit of a reach for me but I just do it one bit at a time and we get there! :D
 
thanks so much guys made me feel alot better about things, she has 3 5year old warmbloods herself who she only has lession on say i cant compete till they 100% right well that day never comes, i want to be out competing and improving and having lessions
She on the other hand is a large lady and does look out of place on her 15.3 but i dont say a thing to her

one can only show and other is lame and will be for sometime i want something to event and show next season planning on having lessions doing hunter trials sjing and dressage over the winter. x

I'm 5ft 4 and in my picture that is me on my 16h wideish gelding ! dont think I look out of sorts in any of my pictures on him !

With everyone else on this - you ride what you want to ride not what other people say you should - some of the police riders look tiny on their great giants but obviously are in full control ! x
