Today I saw a comment someone had put on facebook about the fact they had no intention of gelding their, rather poor, colt as they thought it was cruel and unnecessary. They seemed to honestly believe that there would be absolutely no problem with it and all they will have to do is keep it in it's current field as the mares are all kept in a separate field next door. This person had apparently 'rescued' the colt and thinks there are too many unwanted horses out there, but seems quite willing to possibly be responsible for more indiscriminate breeding.
Why do some people find it so hard to get their heads round the fact that, far from being 'cruel', gelding is in fact the most responsible and fair thing they can do as an apparent horse lover? In the wild the colts are driven off by the stallion and only the strongest and fittest are able to survive the harsh realities of nature and are able to challenge for a herd and therefore breed. We have taken the majority of horses out of the wild so it is our responsibility to ensure that we do all that we can to make sure that they are given the best chances of a long and healthy life even before conception!
Sorry about the rather long winded waffle it just annoys me
