I know there are lots of people selling horses who moan about time waster buyers and fair enough, I'm sure there are quite a few but I just have to vent my annoyance about sellers who waste buyers time and money and play with their emotions!

After searching for a new horse for well over 6 months I saw an advert for a lovely looking horse and emailed the owner, one of the first questions I asked was does the horse have any injuries or illnesses? She was older than the other horses I was originally looking at.

I was told that she had a scar on her back leg from an old injury and that she once had colic but that was it. Fair enough.

Went to view said horse. Picture on ad was obviously very old but she still looked nice just fat and unfit. Horse was already tacked up when I arrived, she was very stiff to ride and seemed slightly lame but the owner assured me it was because she had not been turned out and had been in alot recently. So, I liked her and arranged a vetting. Vet come out and instantly notices a small sarcoid, he asks owner if horse has anymore to which owner replies yes and points out a large one between her front legs in front of the girth! Owner 'forgot' to mention it to me as horse has had it for years.

Well I instantly didn't want the horse as an old friend had a horse with sarcoids and they just got worse and worse and horse ended up having to be put down. If this one spread or grew it would be under the girth and horse would be unrideable! I know that if I had tacked the horse up on the first visit I probably would have seen it but we live and learn! I will go over the horse with a fine tooth comb next time! The lameness/stiffness also turned out to be in three out of four legs and was joint and tendon related!

I'm just so annoyed as not only did I waste £200 on a vetting and £50 on petrol but about 12 hours of my time on two visits and travelling not to mention the emotional upset of thinking I had found my next horse after searching for 6 months only for it all to be a complete waste of time.

Sorry but really!!!

How frustrating for you, but I guess that's what vettings are for.
I have to say, when I sold my mare who had bone spavin, I was scrupulously honest about her condition and what she could and couldn't do. I would have been so ashamed if something had shown up in a vetting or six months down the line that I had neglected to mention.

unfortunately a lot of people selling horses are very economical with the truth... probably because if you come and see the horse you might buy it, but if they tell the truth and you don't come, you definitely won't buy it, so they have nothing to lose. :( :(
i've had horses age and shrink overnight between me ringing and asking about the horse, and turning up to try it the next day. infuriating, i agree.

I think most horse owners could give hundreds of anecdotes about time wasting sellers. Don't think it is just amateur owners that tell lies. I have been shown horses by people who are GB team riders, that were absolutely not as described in the advert. When it comes to money, people are willing to tell huge whoppers to pass on their problem horses.

Yep I'm looking at the moment too and it is frustrating.

I went to see one, the seller mentioned some small scars on his chest that were only noticeable when he'd just been clipped - we turned up and he was covered, don't know what had happened to the poor horse but his chest shoulders and neck were covered in scars and he had more on the rest of his body too. He didn't feel quite right when I rode him and then he bronced and I hit the deck...... they said they had someone else interested but he's still advertised.......... hmmm

Hopefully the sellers of this one I'm seeing tonight have been honest and we will be seeing a very lovely if slightly green big mare..................... Fingers crossed.

Poor you; might be worth you having a good look over the horse yourself next time as you would have spotted the sarcoids yourself and saved having the vetting done.

Dealers on here get a real slating but in truth it's a risky business buying horses where ever you buy them from.

Unfortunately wherever money and animals are involved, the animals always come off worst :-(
