Prices of grain are rising dramatically along with the poor hay crop are all going to have an effect on costs. What have members on this forum heard from their suppliers generally as to future prices?
I know the price of barley for malting is about £140/t, we couldn't sell it last year it had to go for feed at £72/t. If the other grain prices follow suit then hopefully this year we will be getting a decent amount for our grain. Straw off the field atm is about £65/t, probably about a £10-15 increase on last year. Unfortunately this will probably mean an increase in feed prices although they seem to rise even when off farm cereal prices are low. Someone somewhere is making a healthy profit, and its not the farmers.
We've heard that although the prices are increasing, the USA has last year's grain in stock so may limit how much farmers get paid for the grain this year, however i'm sure that someone other than farmers are getting a lot of money for the grain this year
