I would like to see all our native breeds (ALL, not just the small m&m that you see showing!) like Cleveland Bays and Eriskay included! Also interesting if it includes info on the other breeds that have been improved with them. Also examples of the breed and areas that they are competing sucessfully in (as well as showing which sometimes seems all a rare breed can do!). Would love to see this!

I am getting excited!! Might be on to something here.... I am sure if we can drum up enough support we will have to be listened to. I can put the result to two people of influence at HH so fingers crossed. I am intrigued by the Marwari Horse - sounds so tough and intelligent and it amazes me how they survive. There are plenty more desert type horses like these which are phenomenal

To go against the grain, it's not that I wouldn't want to see rare breed features in h&h (if that makes sense)! Rather that there are other things that I would like to see taking up the pages.

Personally, I would like to see more hunts featured, especially the hounds working (it is h&h, after all!)

Just my thoughts though :)

Honestly I'd much rather they concentrate on news and current affairs - I don't think that taking resources away from that and asking their journalists to look up information about rare breeds - which can be found reasonably easily elsewhere - would be a good use of their time. It's also not really appropriate content for a news magazine, especially given the short time there is to put the publication together between print runs.

I think it's a good idea. I recently met a lady who has Icelandics, and was amazed how tough and strong they are (and cute!) and also have heard about Shagyr Arabs (sp?) and would be interested to find out more about them.

I think it suits the format of the magazine in its preperation of only a week to have a piece which can be prepared beforehand. Also I think it is a piece which can perhaps be written by the breed assosiations or enthusiasts.

I agree that there seems to be a lack of hunt reports this year though not 'on paper'(same space dedicated to them). But a feature doesn't have to destract from this just be an interesting addition.

And I would like Cumberand Cobs to be covered...(dales x hackney) :D
very versitile breed. :p

I think maybe the 'Horse' Magazine might be better - H&H is more of a news and current affairs paper.

Another vote for the Cleveland Bays! - Maybe the page could have half feature on 'breed of the month' with the other half to recent rare breed results.

i.e. Lucky Lady of Oxfordshire recently went on her 1st days cubbing alone - both Rider and Horse had a great time! :D Only last week she completed a 12Mile 20Jump Sponsored ride - Surely this is one to watch for the future! ;)

If it meant judges would read it and understand that my polish konik cross is nothing like a highland even tho he is the same colour and therefore his confirmation is actually correct for his type I would probably pay for the article myself!!!!!!

But they do different features every week which I wouldn't really class as news, such as the article on video training and joint injections. It's not asking them to become an equine breed encyclopedia but instead to showcase the rarer breeds' performance. They already do show reports so why couldn't they do a report on rarer breeds being shown? I think a lot of people would like H&H to run a regular feature on rarer breeds just for a bit of variety at least.

Cynical Faro has voted "not worried" as I gave up buying Horse magazines of any kind ages ago. The only mags I get nowadays are British Horse (BHS membership mag) and Endurance (EGB membership mag).

Horse and Hound itself I only ever buy for the annual Shows Guide Issues (sorry to all you HH staff, but at least I'm being honest!) and I would also buy it if I was looking to purchase another horse (or perhaps an equestrian property - but that's only a dream).

Am afraid that in this economic climate, magazines are just about the first things that had to go. So, only speaking for myself of course, a breed feature wouldn't be enough incentive for me to purchase a magazine that I wouldn't normally buy.

At least it would be something differant to the usual stuff.I tend to look at the letters page and see if there is an article on anything other than racing showing and eventing

There are so many interesting and unusual breeds doing so many differant things or maybe H&H is following the BBC's example of equine events and ignoring them;)

I just think that if H&H can do a regular feature like 'First&Last,' it would be easy enough to follow a similar format and run a feature of rarer breeds. I don't mean a generic format of showing the breed/give height/place of origin etc. I'd like to see an interview with a representative/owner of a rarer breed discussing their attributes and their place in British showing/performance. Then there could be a section on giving examples of the breed doing there thing e.g. jumping or showing classes or dressage. Obviously a million different things could be done in an article but I'm just giving an example of a format that could be sued without too much 'hassle' to the H&H researchers if that's what they're worried about.

Me too, please understand my Ardennes (trait Ardennais) is NOT overweight her breed is a small heavy horse. Also my Gelderlander is meant to be long and rangy, he is Not a heavy horse.

How about unusual or rare breeds who supposedly "can't" go certain things that WB etc can i.e. dressage, jumoing etc.
My daughter normally competes with her Fjord at the equivalent of affiliated medium/advanced dressge here in The Netherlands. He's out of the running at the minute after an op for his DDFT and annular ligaments. She was only 2 points off moving up to advanced. Her story will be appearing in Pony magazine some time in the near future.

not something i would read- would prefer well written hunt reports, or indepth show reports (not just flavour of the month over and over) including large M&M's!

proper reports are hard to find which is(well was) H&H's niche, articles on specific breeds are incredibly easy (and far more comprehensive) online.

Hi all. I can understand how people expect HH to be a current affairs magazine for the older crew but I do think for educating youngsters and new horse owners it would be good to add a section on rare/unusual breeds. Faro - you may not be worried due to the economic climate - I read HH on line or at work. I don't pay for the weekly mag but again I think the education part for people who subscribe is invaluable. Rara007 - suggesting it goes into Horse - I do not know this magazine and I'm assuming Pony is for children - I think this is short sighted. There are a lot of people in the UK and Worldwide who either subscribe or read HH and would not assume a rare/unusual breed column is aimed at kids. On the hunting issue - I know that my hunt do not publish their dates and only have one published documentary on them per year due to anti's. I don't know if this is the same for other hunts but if you feel your hunt isn't being regarded by HH I'd speak to your hunt secretary and see what they say. Other than that I think it's a good cause to get our rare/unusual breeds into the forefront and raise awareness of them. This is coming from an avid flat racing person so I'm not being biased!!
