Can anyone help please. Brought my pony in from field tonight and she is covered with hives all around her rear end and some on her sides and back. They don't appear to be bothering her particularly but one or two have scabs and the hair pulls off easily. The only thing that really bothers me is that there are two areas under her mane that look sore and that are open. The mane itself was a bit matted around where these sore bits are.

I tried to get a pic of one of the sores but couldn't manage it unfortunately, however the scab was "crusty" and yellowish in colour.

My pony is 13 and has never had sweet itch before, I have however had her on Danilon for a sore back and Lexvet mineral mix for about 4 days, do you think it could be some sort of reaction to one of these as nothing else has changed in her diet .

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I can add photos if someone tells me how to please.
Thanks

Mine's had this a few times in the last few months. I call it 'the bumps' as in 'the bumps are back' or 'wtf are these bumps'. Anyway I had the vet out twice as they made my lad very, very itchy. First time we tried antibiotics which didn't really do much. The bumps went eventually. In the meantime he was uncomfortable and some hair dropped out like a paintbrush shape with an oozy crystal-like yellow goo on the end. Anyway last time, different vet, he says it's a skin infection like rain scald. Proven by the itchiness returning after he accidentally got wet again.

We did a hibiscrub bath (mild hibi, diluted) good rinse, dry, then rug to go out if it threatens rain. I hate doing this as I'd rather he was naked, but it's not an option. I've bought an amigo Aussie waterproof (well, water resistant) fly rug and he wears that, it's white so reflects the heat. He seems to like it, and no more bumps! I also boiled all my brushes/cleaned tack numnah etc to be double safe. Hypocare or eqyss micro tek worked well where my lad had rubbed his mane and tail. Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

Thank you, that sounds just the same as Jazz. It's reassuring to know that you managed to sort it out. I have been hibiscrubbing her and the vets coming in the morning so hopefully he will be able to give me some form of treatment for her. Did you find out what caused your horses' problem ?

Well, not specifically. The vet said they could do a skin scrape but it would be painful and expensive so he just said to treat as rain scald. Definitely some bacteria in the rain. The pores open up when he's wet letting the bacteria in. You have to be careful of the same thing if they sweat in a rug as well. Fairly confident it was rain scald, just presenting in a rather unusual bumpy way!

Forgot to say that the vet said by the time they are bumpy and scabby the infection is already well under way so the good news is that it should soon reach a conclusion if you can kill the bacteria and keep your girl dry!

Thank you, I will take extra care. Vet thinks its an allergy and has prescribed antihistamines but will follow all advice I've been given. Thanks

Presently my friesian is just getting over something similar. He started off with general warm lumpiness which developed scabs and lots of scurf - covered head, neck, girth, loins between legs - nearly everywhere!
Vet prescribed steroid jab, lots of antihistamines (buy one get one free at the mo) plus etiderm shampoo. After 3 weeks much improvement but a set back last night when he was getting lumpy again - hit him with the antihis' seems no worse today - hope I've nipped it before it set in again - best of luck!

My mare is also bumpy, vet been twice but no answers, just trial and error with different washes etc, its been 4 months now! Please let me know if you find a cause and cure! See my post further up, good luck x

Just come back from yard and there is a definite improvement tonight.. I havent touched the sore bits, just left well alone like the vet said and have kept her covered in fly rug for two days so nothing can get underneath. I am sure that not bathing it in anything or putting creams on has helped, although its very hard to see it looking gammy and not do anything,

Tonight I've given her 6 piriton and will see how she is tomorrow. Hoping that the lumps & bumps will have disappeared but will keep you posted.

Had similar last year - poor boy was on steroids and antihistamines - problem was once the steroids were finished the lumps came back. It will almost definitely be an allergic reaction. You can go down steroid and antihistamine route but you really need to find out what he's allergic to - its most likely something that he's eaten. I went down the alternative route - he was allergic to a mould in the haylage - I can give you details if you want. I claimed for the alternative treatment and was payed out :) he's been hive free ever since.

A detox can work I have used the NAF one on a horse that the vet failed to find the cause of his skin condition, having treated with steroids and various washes it cleared up fairly quickly once on the detox.

:):). I am delighted to report that the lumps & rash have completely gone following 3 days treatment with piriton (human variety). Total cost £6.00 !

There isn't a bump insight this morning. Can't tell you how relieved I am. I gave jazz 6 x piriton morning & night the first day, then 3 tablets morning & night the next so days. No other treatment at all, I left her neck alone as advised and whilst its still a bit crusty it's also healing nicely.

Thank you all for your help & advice, I hope this thread might help someone else too.
