Rather gruesome (sorry!) but can you get your own horse butchered and eat it?

BBQ season is well and truely here, nothing wrong with a bit of horse steak on the barbie, better than some of the fatty stuff leading supermarkets sell, at least you know what kind of life its had and how it was ended.

Gosh, what a bunch of funny people!

I've eaten two of my much loved and named pets (Louise and Buttercup!) because of life threatening injury or just annoying me too much (lol!)

Dorey wouldn't be very nice to munch on at all, but River will be lovely in a few more weeks!!

I didn't know it was illegal to slaughter your own livestock here. Been killing sheep too order for a year (not in this country :p ) and it's kinda fun!

harshest post ever! hehe.... HHO is so funny on one hand we go crazy about the showjumper smacking the horse to the jump (def wrong) or too much flexion and on the other hand we have people eating their horse!!

Apparently horse meat is quite nice, and healthier for you than beef or pork etc as there is less fat. Also some studies have shown particularly in Italy, that older horses actually taste nicer than younger horses. Although they still eat very young horses in other countries, these studies are relatively new...the horses used have been working horses and somehow the meat tastes nicer! (Although that is subjective to the food tasters).

A lot of horse meat in this country goes into pet food and Longleat! :)

If you are in Gloucestershire then the closest place will be Potters. I don't see why not providing the medication, bute etc. Although you will need a big freezer!
I think I would try it...if it's not my horse! And I have been to Potters and seen horses slaughtered and it is done quickly and quietly. None of the horses there suffer and they don't even know what is going to happen, unlike pigs. Most of the horses go with their eyes bright and their ears perky.

I have dissected a lot of heads during my time at uni, and I have considered it...the masseter (cheek) muscle looks nice!

Sorry If I make anyone feel queasy! :)

I don't know if you can do it (to stay within the law) but would be supportive of anybody who wanted to give an animal a good end with the minimum of travel and upset....

......a freezer full of meat would be a bonus, and worth more than whatever Potters are paying, I imagine.
