This is a bit self-indulgent, but I am rather pleased with Jakey and I know other doggie people will understand.

We had two little boys visiting yesterday, age 5 and 7. We don't have children and although we try to get the dogs socialised with children it's not exactly easy (can't really walk up to people on the street and ask to borrow their kids!).

The little boys were running around with the 3 dogs and Jakey had taken the opportunity to collect every one else's treats and retreat to my office to eat them. He was laying down just inside the door with treats all around him.

At some point the two boys, Pookie and I all converged by the open door. Pookie moved towards the treats and got growled at and at exactly the same moment one of the little boys put his hand down to take the treat (I think he could tell both dogs wanted it so he wanted to see what it was). It was too quick for me to say/do anything, but Jakey was a star. He pulled his head back and looked sideways letting the little boy pick up the treat he was eating, despite the fact that Pookie was also still there.

So of course I would agree that what he did was just good manners, but it's always nice to see him behave well in a stressful situation!

Aw bless him, totally understand why you are pleased. Years ago before I had children I was at an agricultural show with one of my GSD bitches. I was sitting at the ringside watching the jumping with her lying by my side, and little boy walking past lost his balance and fell on her. She yelped, jumped up and then just turned and looked reproachfully at him. A couple of years later when my daughter was born the same dog was the most wonderful companion to her.:)

What a Good boy, your Jakey is!

And some say that dogs have a level of maturity as a two or three year old child, but I haven't met a two or three year old child, that would not object if somebody tried to take a lollipop from them.

:D

What a good pooch.

It is a worry when you haven't got children around the dogs all of the time to know how they might react to them.

I was staying at my brothers with his family the other Xmas when my 3 year old Nephew was playing with a tea set (don't ask, he's a modern man!) the tea pot lid was under one of my dogs heads as he was snoozing on the floor. Nephew pulled it out, dog didn't move. Then, when he'd finished playing with it, he lifted Caffrey's head to put it back where he got it from! Bless, dog opened one eye and that was it!

Its amazing how intuitive dogs are isn't it but its also very much down to your good handling of the dogs and teaching them respect and manners in their general everyday life. :)

Yay, good boy Jakey.

I was walking through the campsite earlier and there were a bunch of young children running through the bushes and squealing...thought B would have a fit but he didn't bat an eyelid and wagged his tail as we passed, one little girl was hiding under a tree just feet from him.

Had it been adults messing about in the bushes, he would have marched in there, ordererd them all out and ask them to explain EXACTLY what they thought they were doing?? :p
