My boyfriend noticed evidence of rats under our flat yesterday (we live above a shop). He lifted the skip bin lid to come face to face with atleast 30 rats! Now this is our only evidence of rats and until then we didnt realise there was a problem. The bin that was full of them belonged to the shop that has been empty since last summer and was full to the top with food from the shop. We assumed the bin was empty!
We managed to get in contact with the letting agent of the shop who contacted the landlord who sent out pest control. After speaking to pest control, the guy told me that he will arranged to have the bin removed but in the mean time he said that another problem which needed to be sorted would be the dumped materials on our shared garden left by the decorating company next door (not the shop who left the skip with food, we live above a row of shops). He said that they are harbouring vermin by leaving it there.
The decorating company next door arent our favourite people anyway, the are very rude and inconsiderate of residents, often loading and unloading vans gone midnight/early hours.
I then thought about it and realised that they store hazardous chemicals which are flammable within 20 feet from our kitchen! ok, they are locked up but the containers are sitting on our shared garden where my daughter will play in the summer and we will have bbq's! (we have only been in the flat for a year).
They also block access to our flat when they have meetings and sometimes I struggle to walk behind the shops to our front door because of the amount of cars parked there.
I appreciate, I probably sound like I am moaning on and to be honest, I probably wouldnt have given the storage of chemicals and their dumped materials a second thought (we hope to move in a year or so) but now that we are infested with rats and I have a 10 month old daughter, I really am not happy!
So, not only are they harbouring vermin and dumping materials on our shared garden, they also have a skip and store hazardous and flammable chemicals and paint directly outside our flat on our shared garden.
I am going to speak to our council tomorrow but does anyone have any advice before I do so and where would I stand?
Thank you for taking the time to read my rant....vino and choccies for all! x
