Oh this is just a rant!! Because Super is in the stud at the mo and I'm not riding her, I decided to have a spring clean

I went to my little wardrobe thing where I store all my numnahs, boots etc only to find there has been a visitor!!! A big dirty rat! All my stuff is covered in the most vile BIG droppings, stained with urine ewwwwwwwww To add insult to injury, all my sponges, one of my seat savers and some of my numnahs have been ripped to shreds!!!

I've chucked what's been destroyed and sent the rest to the cleaners. Okay, my wardobe thing is one from Argos and is wood and material, so not very rat proof! So how can I make it rat proof?? Is plastic better then wood?

get rat poison, we had loads of the horrid rodents, soon sorted that....even found one wearing my jod boots...har har lol.
I think rats will eat in to anything..may be get a steel cuboard to keep smallish things in.

My pet rats eat anything given the chance, they have eaten most of my tea towels by pulling them off the radiators when they are drying and they have also eaten my OH's shirt. LOL

you can get metal containers in the shape and size of toy boxes, i put my bits in that, its no good for saddles/bridles but the little sh*ts cant get in!!!

yeh we have metal feed bins all with lids and padlocks they dont get through that its great well unless they get clever enouth to pick locks lol lol

here are some interesting facts about your favourite rodents

* Rats can't vomit.

* Rats can eat chocolate.

* Hot rats will lay on their back so they can sweat through the soles of their feet.

* When a rat is happy it will chatter it's teeth.

* A rat's fur can smell like grape soda.

* Rat teeth grow 5 inches per year.

* Rats can squeeze through an opening no larger than a 50p piece.

* A pair of rats can multiply more than 15,000 in one year.

* Rat teeth are so strong they can chew through concrete.

* Rats can eat smaller pets; such as birds, fish and smaller rodents.

* Rats spread disease.

* Rats damage more than 1/5 of the world's food crop each year.

* Rats can jump over 4 feet straight up and over 6 feet horizontally.

* Cats are not effective against rats. 9 out of 10 exterminators would say, Cat vs. Rat, Rat would win.

Thanks guys, steel is an option I never thought of!
smile.gif
There is poison around but I have to be careful as there are dogs around as well! I've set traps but caught nothing as well
mad.gif
Rats don't appreciate good rashers! Maybe if I put sponge in the trap it would have gone for it! LOL

I'll look into steel containers now
smile.gif
Thanks again!

they walk round our town in broad daylight nowadays, jumping onto the edges of bins and eating leftovers with people walking past them, doesn't bother them in the slightest... the rats, I mean...

Thanks for the facts - very intersting

I'm not sure if this is a myth, but one guy told me what some people do on there farms.

They catch a rat and keep it alive in a barrel but starve it and keep banging the barrel making it really angry. When it's really starving and angry they throw in another rat. The original rat - angry and starving kills and eats the other rat. This is repeated until they have a rat that has a taste for other rats and they set it free....

How true those that sound. Is my leg being pulled??

rats eating your horse's feet.. are you joking!!! what do you mean..getting me worried now...

I've heard storys of rats nibbling babies feet in cots!

hmm could be possible, rats are known to cannibalise other rats, but usually it's the adult rats eating the "kittens" (as baby rats are known)... not sure you could create a monster Hannibal The Cannibal-type rat
grin.gif
Not sure I'd like to try to, either...

They have been chewing my horse's feet for te past couple of nights because they have chewed through the stable wall in three places...

I think rats might actually be better...

(with you on that one paintbox!)

We have rats at the stables too, I have an odd problem of being fine with caged rats, happily let them sit on my shoulder, but rats at the stables...OMG I nearly die of fear! The other day a huge fat one ran out when I was getting changed, prompting me to run screaming out on to the yard in my underwear

Luckily Flash is quite protective of me and his dinner, so is rather agressive with the rats and keeps me and his lickit safe!

Hun, you really need to get some poison. Rats carry sooooo many germs, they drag their tail in their urine and will bite and then rub their tails over the bite thus infecting it with all their horrid germs. I had a yard cat once that was killed by rats biting her feet. Especially with your gorgeous wee foalie, one bite on the lower limbs that then gets infected - it doesn't bear thinking about. Please get some poison, put it in small sections of drain-pipes and cover with a bit of slate/stone leaving only a small gap so dogs etc can't get to it.

would the Jack Russells not worry the horses? Don't shoot me if you own JR's!
tongue.gif
but they've always chased me and gone for my ankles...
tongue.gif
I suppose the rats wouldn't like it if a JR went for its ankles though
