Have been meeting one of the liveries at 7am each morning in the school to overcome some confidence issues. Her CBx has had an occasional dry cough for the last week since she fed him some old hay rather than his usual haylage. This morning his chest was 'rattling' as though he had fluid on his lungs (a bit like a heavy smoker first thing in the morning). No snot, no flegm when he coughs.

In all my years around horses I have never heard anything like it and told her to turn him out and ring the vets for advice as I felt it was a chest infection and needed antibio's.

Vet coming tonight, but would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced this as its bothering me.

Donkey coughed continually at YHL - think it was due to the dry cold air there - I bought something, I think called Dustex from Global Herbs and it did seem to help a bit - she has not coughed again since leaving that environment.

Would also suggest soaking hay although it might have already ingesting some yukky spores.

Look after him - he's a very important breed

Pester and LlwyncwnLLL - do you think the cause of the cough could be the swallowing of a piece of fleece sleeve that said Velocoraptor ate from arm of nervous rider a few days ago? I think you should not only soak Velocoraptor's hay, but your fleece too. Seriously though folks, on top of my metal cupboard, there are 2 Lincoln Cough Syrups that helped Sunny...won't cure his chest prob but it might make his throat more comfortable til the vets arrive. Help yourself. Fingers crossed is only an allergy to human fleece! xxx

Not 100%, but think he is crossed with a Rotweiler

He makes an olympic sport out of intimidating any weakness he spots in someone and you can almost hear him laughing when people react to his idle threats

His sier was full CB and the mare was TBxID!! Even though he has his moments and bucks for Wales, I wouldn't have him any other way!! He is exstramly skitso, one day he is like a lamb and wouldnt hurt a fly and the other you have to really be on your toes. Even though he has his 'moments' I have never had such a caring kind natured (at times) horse. Although I do not have the confidance yet to ride him effectivley, on the groud he is a darling with humans but very teritorial with other horses, is this common in his breed?

I love how he identifies the less confiedt people on the yard and then makes their life 'difficult', yes I do have a sick sense of humor!!

Will down load some pictures at the weekend!!

Anyway, off to see the vet now, wish me luck!!

How's your horse?

My 19 year old gelding has developed a dry cough over the past week which worsened over the weekend. His respiration rate is high but temperature is normal. No mucus and no phlegm. Cannot pinpoint any cause as we are into late spring here in NZ and he is living out in the field (no hay required so no dust).

The vet came today (a very competent, experienced vet) and after checking him out, considers him to have pharyngitis. He is now on penicillin and bute. The vet's concern is that this condition usually affects young horses and is not common in older horses.

I am interested to know how your horse is now. What did the vet say? Hope all is well.

Hi Gunn, Im responding on behalf of Chesters owner! Vet came and scratched her head a bit and said that it could be an underlying COPD or it could be an infection! 7 days of Trimed and he can be worked. I helped her in the school this morning and he was quite forward and alert and his chest seems much better already. Chester is 9.

Although Im no vet, I would have thought that with Pharyngitis that your boys temperature would have been raised. Would be interested to see how the penicillin and bute work for him. Do let us know how he is. Hx

Swab from a nasal discharge that developed has revealed e coli causing respiratory infection. The horse hadn't responded to the penicillin at all (apparently the e coli was peniciliin resistant) and he is now on Excenel. He had his third injection of Excenel today but he is still coughing and respiration rate is still up. The nasal discharge seems to have decreased. He isn't off his feed at all and is quite bright and alert. But I'm really worried about him (I've had him for 18 years). Does Excenel take some time to show improvement in the horse or should I have noticed improvement by now? We are running out of options so any helpful advice is most welcomed.
