I have changed both my dogs over to raw over the last 5-6 weeks and it has gone brilliantly. However my 3.5year old lurcher cross rescue is looking somewhat tubby and I want her to loose a bit. She weighs approx 21kg and has been getting about 600g a day and is very food orientated.

I am a bit worried that if I feed more less meat and more bone she will be constipated. Should I just up the veggies to pad her out a bit so I can reduce the meat? She currently has 3 meals a day because my other dog, a rescue pointer, was skinny and needed 3 meals to feed her up, she is now looking ok but I'm reluctant to drop her back to 2 meals just yet.

An average day would be 200g tripe for breakie, 200g chicken neck/wing for lunch and 200g mince with veggie for tea. (once or twice a week I substitute the mince for liver/kidney mix)

To make things harder, she is work in progress for her recall, so I have to have liver cake or some other attractive treat when walking.

I detest chubby dogs and want my lean lurcher back. (she's walked at least 5 miles a day, and I would struggle to up the exercise)

Thanks

The advice on quantities & ratios is only a guide or starting position, you need to adjust according to each dogs' needs. I have a lab who gets lots of exercise & is as fit as a flea, but he'd be as fat as a pig if he had as much meat as is recommended, so I up the bone ratio with no ill effects.

If she were mine I'd drop the tripe right down, it's known for piling on the pounds & is used for putting weight on. I'd swap it for a lamb rib or chicken carcass for now as it's still early days.

I wouldn't up the bone content and tbh, I think as you're only a couple of months in, stick to the ratios. Just lower the amount you give and feed more by eye. You don't have to religiously give the 3% of body weight daily, this can go up and down and change according to how she looks.
