We've just transitioned our 11yo setter onto Nature's Menu. He's mainly getting the nuggets and all good. He's always had the odd chicken wing and ham bone-I recently tried him with a beef rib but it wasn't much of a success (doesn't seem to like dark meat much ie beef, venison or duck-he does love rabbit, salmon etc). How often can he have chicken wings or chicken portions with bone in them please?

The ratio is 80:10:10 meat, bone, offal. I go by output, so if they're struggling or producing dry crumbly poo, I'm overdoing the bone. If Nature's Menu is complete ie including bone content, you don't need to add further bone if you don't want to. My lot get lots of chicken or lamb breast plus whole chicken carcasses (stripped, not much meat on) plus necks, feet.

I'd maybe give a couple of chicken portions a day and see how he goes. Just make sure he's getting complete from his Nature's Menu.

ok, thanks for that. He's a funny old bean, not keen on raw chunks of chicken breast but does love his wings. NM do bags of chicken portions with bones so I was wondering about using those in addition to the nuggets. He'll not touch the duck necks so the cat is getting those! I haven't yet tried him with raw lamb/beef chunks yet either. Need an extra freezer :/

Have a look at the supermarkets, I swear dog food companies take the mick with prices. Sainsbury does frozen chicken portions, mostly drumsticks, for about £2 a kilo, which is really good value. I wonder if he'd like a pig trotter? Might take him a while to eat. Morrisons do them, plus loads of fish trimmings.

Half a bunny, maybe? Mine get them whole. Pork ribs are good, pricey, tho.

If anyone's getting pork ribs, it'll be me ;)

its a fair point re cost, this has been a new thing as he slowly just started refusing all other types of food-for no reason anyone could fathom (including vet). So am just feeling my way just now-vet was very dubious about RAW but impressed with how good his skin and coat is (history of allergies etc). Pig trotters are a good idea, will look out for them thanks. If he got half a bunny, he'd have to fight off the cat for it. I wasn't sure if drumsticks were too much of a step up bone size wise to have them whole?

My cheeky so and so turned his nose up at pigs trotters. I give him thighs over drumsticks as that bit extra bone reappears early hours of the morning but each dog is different. Loves wings though. Proper human mince he loves but dog mince has to be cooked as he doesn't like sloppy consistency? Odd bod

The mince I use can be quite solid, especially venison. It's the whole carcass shoved through the machine at the abattoir, so quite dense.

mine wont eat bones as such, but love chicken necks. I tried wings and they really arnet keen, But will eat the necks with relish. So I use those and then buy dog mince from the butchers, and give eggs ( they have to be cooked as they wont touch those raw) and mackeral in sunflower oil along with veg and fruit.

I have lots of eggs and both cat and dog get them raw and both love them-I've always held off giving them more than 1 or two a week though because of the avidin/biotin thing. The thinking of this seems to have changed though?
