(Raw?) Linseed - where to buy and how much?

I know a lot of people still buy raw linseed and boil it themselves, im just wondering if its more cost effective than the micronised linseed? I dont mind spending time boiling!

and where do you buy it from?

i dont think ive ever seen it in a feed shop, are there any brands of linseed you can recommend?

Buying it raw is a very cheap option. Any big horse feed merchant should have it. It comes, if you want it in that size, in 20-25kg bags and lasts for ever. We have 4 horses and I would expect the one bag to last them the winter. Hven't bought any this winter yet, but will expect to pay about £10-£12.

'Like how long is a piece of string' it all depends how you feed it, of course. A brew for us is 3 round plastic margarine pots worth of the raw seed into a huge saucepan with about 3+ pints of water, brought to the boil and then stewed overnight in bottom oven of Aga. I then mix it into their sugar beet or directly onto their feed - 1-2 lovely gungy (hot on winter mornings) margarine pots per horse. Some people may feed a lot more. I find that's enough to keep their coats, manes and tails beautiful and their digestions in good order. And they LOVE it. HOpe your horse likes it too. Your purse will.....
 
I have tried both, the raw stuff in a 25kg bag was too much even for 3 horses, it lasted forever. If you have a slow cooker or an aga then it is relatively painless. However, if you try to do it on a normal cooker it is a pain, boils over, boils dry, gets all scummy - honestly, you will be drop kicking the saucepan into the garden before you know it :cool:
 
thanks very much for your replies, ive fed charnwood millings stuff for a while which worked wonders, but i may aswell do it myself if its that much cheaper. No aga, so i will get myself on ebay looking for a cheap slow cooker! :)
 
Great idea using a slow cooker - not sure how long I'd be allowed to use the Aga for cooking linseed! Horse Requisites in Newmarket sell whole linseed. Must be more places around which sell it. If you know how to cook it in a slow cooker, please let me know. I've never used one to cook a potato let alone linseed so will need to be simple instructions!
 
ive tried lots of feed shops near me and no one sells it, and they say they havent seen any around for years! :(
any ideas where i can find any near leeds? please:)
