Following on from the Bakers Dr John thread, (that is getting scary!), been makeing enquiries and phoned my vet today to get my dogs weights. I spoke to the wonderful Vet Nurse who has dogs. Told her what I had discovered about Dr John and found that she pays 0.45p per Kilo for raw dog mince from a butcher not far away. Have calculated it would cost me just over £18 pcm to give my two large dogs 2% of bodyweight per day of that (plus diesel). Don't know whats in the mince but apparently all the scraps.

Popped into the local butcher who is much closer to ask again if they now do dog food (as it recently changed hands) - was told yes, we make a load up once a week and it's £1 per 1lb. Told them what the other butcher charges for dog mince and they said "don't know how he does it for that".

How much per kilo do you pay for raw from your butchers?

Viz, S would cope with raw mince wouldn't she? Teeth still good enough to demolish small bones, just not huge ones.

Also ordered 2 sack of Skinners Hypo. F & T Duck stuff about 30mins before I found the raw source.

Opinions everyone please if you don't mind, esp. if there are any nutritionists in here or people who have really looked into it.

Thanks in advance and again thanks for all the help so far, much appreciated.

Yes I'm sure she would but I'm no RAW expert, I have never fed RAW so cant advise you whether they would get everything they need from a diet of mince alone, I suspect not but I'm sure some RAW feeders will be along shortly to advise.

No idea what mine works out per pound/kilo as my butchers just give me a couple of bags a week and charge me a £1 a bag - it isn't minced though its just bones and scraps and offal.

As some one else said always look on the reduced shelf in the supermarkets and buy up any fish, meat etc going cheap :)

Mine also get the occaisional raw egg, tinned fish (sardines, pilchards, tuna etc) once a week and they also get fruit and veg - they will nick it out of the basket in the pantry :D

My dogs don't like mince and they won't eat it so I no longer buy them it. Their favourite raw food are chicken wings and carcasses, beef rib bones, hearts (beef and chicken), tails, venison legs and heads and rabbits. They don't like chicken drumsticks or most bird/beef innards. Picky lot mine!

I get 10 kilos of chicken carcass for £5 he gets one of those a day and there are about a month's worth in there. Then two bags of minced tripe and whole minced chicken for £10 which I put into Kongs and lasts about a month, then beef ribs or spine from the butcher for free (I buy sausage or something when I am in) and I pick up odds and sods out of the bargain bin in the supermarket like heart and liver.
Oh and a few 50p rolls of Webbox Chubb for training.

Not sure what that works out at as I am crap at maths. I feed by eye but I appreciate I may be doing it wrong. He gets one chicken carcass, two Kongs full of tripe or chicken, one beef bone and about a quarter - half of the Chubb roll a day. If anything he is a bit porky, but very active.

Sounds like you have found a good option :)

Sorry but that is what I eat- NEVER pay full price for food - well not for me anyway! If it's not reduced by over 50% I don't buy it.

Pay full price for the horse and dog food though!

<pedant alert>

It's raw, not RAW. BARF is capitalised as an acronym (bones and raw foods, biologically appropriate raw food, whatever you want it to stand for) but raw just means raw meat.

<pedant alert over>

The 1lb Prize choice blocks are around 80p each, most of the online raw suppliers do meat/offal/bone mixes for 60-90p per 1lb so that seems fairly typical.

I would worry about the content of mince from a butcher as having too much fat in it, being the scraps they can't sell, and unless they can tell you what the ratio is of fat/lean meat/bone/offal I'd only use it as a small part of the diet.

I personally don't think mince alone is sufficient, part of the benefit of feeding raw is the variety of meats, textures and bones, the act of chewing and gnawing is important for teeth. A diet based on a good mince mix (one containing offal and bone) and chicken pieces on the bone, plus the odd marrowbone for recreation and teeth, would be okay in my estimation. Add in supermarket bargain random meat bits, cheap seasonal meat (rabbit, pheasant) tinned fish etc. and you have a nice varied diet.

I don't feed raw but I would have thought that only feeding mince would mean that the dog didn't get the correct ratio of calcium and phosphorus?

Happy to be corrected though :)

Feeding raw means you should be feeding 80:10:10 meat, bone, offal. With butcher's pet mince (wouldn't pay more than about 40p a lb, btw), you won't have any idea what the ratio is so you won't know how much of everything they get. Saying that, raw feeders are often obssessed with poo and you can seen it they're getting the right ratio by checking consistency etc. Euw. However, to start with, you are probably going to be more confident if you can see exactly what they're getting so maybe separate the ratios clearly at first.

Keep looking for a good source: ask about chicken carcasses, they're fab.

Did I post this link already on your other thread (I made it scary? If so, sorry, can't believe how some people view feeding :confused:) Only read the first 3 pages:

My butchers charges me about £6 for my six dogs' weekly supply of' raw plus there used to be enough to give to my gun dog trainer for her eight dogs, too. Bargain! But last Monday I received a text from gun dog trainer to say one of her working cockers, Lula, was in intensive care at Cambridge Vet School Hospital having had a bone removed for her oesophagus.........£4,500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine are still eating raw but iI pam SO careful now!

Hope Lula is ok, sadly Raw is not always the best some dogs cannot adjust to it or cannot tolerate it. And ive sadly seen a few cases some what have not ended nicely with bones. Fingers crossed Lula will be ok x

I use these people

http://landywoods.co.uk/price_list.html

minimum order £30 and if you have trouble with freezer space or ordering 30 quids worth, get a few friends on board to come in with you which is what I did until I bought a new large freezer for it all. One of my mates still buys his monthly supply from me.I sell marrow bones to neighbours too for their dogs.
It costs us around £10 per week to feed 3 dogs.
I did use the dog food company for a while but my dogs just don't like scotts mince for some reason so had to transfer back to landywoods.
