I've just spotted in the post below a couple of people saying that they hate rawhide chews. I've seen this said before quite a few times. Can anyone tell me why? Are they dangerous, and if so - how? And also if so, why does pretty much every pet shop sell them?

My personal experience of them is that a dog can bite off fairly large chunks and swallow them. They then do not break down in the stomach. I have been lucky but have heard of several cases of them causing blockages resulting in surgery. Presumably pet shops sell them just as they sell squeaky toys etc which can also be swallowed by dogs. The only difference is that the toys usually have packaging which warns about this danger, whereas chews are often sold loose.

To be totally honest? I dont feed them because I used to own dogs who would chew them into mushy yuckiness then abandon them on the carpet, where my feet would tend to find them

Or there were the others who would chew them to mushiness then try and swallow them, with accompanying coughing, spluttering and (usually) being sick a few minutes later

I feed mine the other sorts of chew now which they can bite into chunks and eat bit by bit - they have one every night as their bedtime snack - or Smackos, which for some reason both my dogs go crazy for (I assume it is because they are very fatty!)

Ah ok. That makes sense. Our dogs have always had them and loved them. Acolyte - I'm familiar with the yucky mess too

.

My pup has them occasionally and really enjoys them... Thinking twice about it now though.

This is very interesting. My pup absolutely loves them, yes they make a slimey mess buit they keep him occupied for ages.
He has never tred to bite chuks off and digest them he just chews.

Though saying that he had a rawhide shoe which he may well have swallowed the sole whole this morning...I better go look for it!

We fed them for ages with no problem, then one of our dogs chocked on one. Ended up at the emergency vets one evening and was going to have to leave her there with the possibility of surgery. Luckily half way home she was sick and it dislodged, so we could go back and get her. Ended up with a bill of around £150 for the exam, an injection of some form and out of hours call out! So now we don't feed them anymore, better to be safe than sorry is how i see it now.

It's the weird coloured ones that I defo wouldn't feed to my Beastie. As a treat every now and again she will get one of the natural ones, but is never left unattended with it.

Labs never get them, they just get big bones from the butcher!

My terrier nearly choked to death when he was a yr old on a raw hide bone the ones with the knots on each end, he chewed the knot off then chew it untill it went soggy and then swallowed in, the started choking, I managed to put my hand down his throat and pull it out and saved his life, so never again!!! The dog eventually did choke to death at the age of 15 on a peice of chicken, its a horrible way to watch your dog die believe me!!!

does any one let their dogs eat the hoof trimmings ? my jrt goes mental for them.
I know I've kinda gone off on a tangent but surely that's rawhide in its first stage
please correct me if I'm wrong.

Mine all line up for the hoof trimmings. They seem to crunch them up fine rather than reducing them to soggy chunks which is what happens to the rawhide chews. But don't think it is the same, I always thought rawhide chews were made from skins (hide). I don't evey buy the hooves from pet shops, in fact not seen any recently do they still sell them?

I've seen hooves for sale on markets occasionally they are usually with a meaty flavour filling !!
i don't like the look of them though so I've never brought one.

Thanks for the hoof skin correction.
