Scottish ITV have just done a wee bit on the Edinburgh RDA wanting an indoor school and they showed a guy riding in the snow covered school. What is wrong with that? I hear you ask. Well they had bent leg irons on the saddle - on backwards! Why is it SO hard to get these the correction way round?!?

Ooh rookie error! I assure you, greater manchester RDA wouldn't be having that! We're trying to get money for an indoor school as well...coincidence!

We wouldn't either.

That said, judging by the lack of knowledge at a training day I went to last year, it sadly doesn't surprise me...

Gah! Bit of a slap in the face moment going, 'why did I do that?!'. Can assure it's only the select few, but alas got to agree I've seen it happen all over the place.

At our centre there is a mix of helpfull volunteers that know more about the kids and then a group of hardened horsey folk . The stirrups should have devonshires on anyway which negates any worry about the safety stirrups

I emailed Barnsby about this as they show loads of adverts with Guy (Williams?) the show ju with his stirrups the wrong way round; they tweeted back to say they would look in to it but I have since seen loads more pics in various shoots with his stirrups the wrong way round. Why?!

Overall the training provided by RDA is of a good standard, however down at group level it is very much dependant upon individuals taking advantage of that training. I cannot comment upon other regions/groups but here the County Instructors visit every group each year and are always helpful and knowledgeable, picking up on faults like this. They are on the end of the phone for advice at anytime and will go into groups that are full of novice helpers for extra training sessions.

One thing I have noticed, and not just in RDA, is that those who need the most training are often those that do not attend any training days.

However the Group Instructor on the day should have picked up on the stirrups as they have done training and been assessed on their knowledge in order to get to that level.

I do believe that we all know of a BHSPTT who would also miss this basic mistake, especially if they are panicked and flustered by having a camera crew around.
