i donated to claire because she is so so so brave and inspirational, i thought doing my bronze duke of edinburgh this weekend in gale winds and torrential rain was hard but i kept thinking of her doing the marathon the whole 15 miles and that kept me going. someone will be making a very angry phone call and i think everyone else should too.
 
She would have been aware before she started, surely? It was fairly well publicised that due to insurance issues they were not able to support anyone who finished outside the 12 h window. I have a huge amount of admiration for what she is doing and have donated all I can, but VLM cannot take responsibility for what happens outwith the Marathon day itself.

But it would be physically impossible for her to finish it in the 12h (or 24hr) window - it would be much better publicity if they showed that they have a "human" side and awarded her the medal. After all, she is doing this to raise awareness and money for a charity - which she is doing very very successfully.

The marathon is very demanding physically on someone with a fully functioning body - imagine the demand on a body powered by robotic legs.

The medal would cost VLM probably £5 - even if the country is in recession you think they could spare a fiver...

It is absolutely nothing to do with the money. It is to do with threatened lawsuits in the past from people deciding to do the marathon outside marathon Sunday, and injuring themselves in the process. If they give medals out then they are in part taking responsibility, which legally they have been told not to do.

Yes it's crap, but it was made very clear in the press that this would be the case.

Surely the logical way around that would be keep track of where she is in her marathon and then the day before or morning of the day she is due to complete and then state that anyone who completes the marathon between a very specific time eg 2.30-3.30 will get a medal. This will ensure Claire gets her medal but restricts it so that they can't be sued etc. Either that or say can't do the medal but here is XXXXthousand pounds sponsorship!
 
It was massively well publicised why they cant do the medals for ages beforehand, I dont think it will be uppermost in Claire's mind and I think there are other causes she would probably prefer HHos efforts to go on, like publicising her achievement, campaigning for horsey access (esp the effects of the CROW act on horse access) etc etc

But what she is doing is the marathon route, not the marathon. She won't have paid an entry or anything to VLM, she is just choosing to run the same route.

I would sincerely hope that the sponsors could find some way of marking her incredible achievement though.

ETA ^^ good post above. Has anyone actually asked Claire what she thinks, and what she wants people to do? Having met her, I don't think she would want anyone making angry phone calls to VLM :(

She had an official start number on her first day so was officially entered! I wonder would VLM consider my idea as a compromise?
 
So if VLM won't give Claire a medal, how about they match whatever she raises????? I am sure that would be very much appreciated..
