I know a lot of us have had our usual exercise routines interrupted by the snow, just wondering how much fitness you think your horse has lost and what your plan is to get back on track.
Fittening horses seems to be something everyone does differently, I know that even on our little yard of 3 we all tackle things a different way.
So how long has your horse had off, how fit was it before, and what are you doing now???
My pony wasnt exactly fit before but I am just keeping him ticking over until the spring.

Thanks! :)
left over After 8s for answers, Im on a diet lol

I'm only just starting to ride again after about a month due to snow/ice/fog have been out hacking twice this week so think I'll just stick to hacking for a couple of weeks! I'm panicking a bit tho as my mare is a bit chubby and need to get weight off before spring. Wouldn't say she has lost a lot of fitness tho as she was just hacking fit before the snow!

My horse was quite fit before the snow, and had 2 weeks off, before a week of being ridden again and then a further 2 weeks off.

So far he's been taken for a 20 minute hack, then a 40 minute hack and lightly schooled twice. Will probably just keep things light for now until I'm sure we're not getting any more of the cold stuff :(

We were lucky that our horse only lost a fortnight's work in the second lot of snow and five days in the first lot. He was also pretty fit beforehand and had hunted a couple of days before each lots of snow, plus he has plenty of turnout and was actually out 24/7 over Christmas, so kept himself active. When he started working again, he had two days hacking, two days schooling, one day jump schooling, then hunted yesterday and was plenty fit enough judging by his antics in the field this morning.

Mine have been off since september bar a few half hour hacks here and there so I'm really starting from scratch!! 30 mins walk hack for 1st week then up to 45 mins but I'll be restricted to the school as of wednesday during the week so maybe only 30 mins and a little trot work. Next week will start some mid week easy lunging too. Aiming for a 15km pleasure ride in 6 weeks hopefully!!

Mine has been off for six weeks and I just started riding him yesterday. He's lost a lot of his topline and his belly has grown (despite him being a TB living out 24/7!) I've been hacking him out, mostly in walk but the occasional trot. I'll probably do this for the next few weeks and if he feels like he's going ok I'll resume my lessons again. It's so good to be back on board again!
