Following on from the high viz post, I thought I'd share what I put on when I hack out. Not sure if you can tell from the picture, but I also have a laminated "SOS Card" tucked into my hat band. It has my next of kin, blood group and medical allergy details as well as Patches vet details, freezemark number (in case we're separated) etc on it.

So, here's me and Miss Patches this morning

So, come on, let's see your high viz.....be it day-glo pink or the more traditional yellow.

Her feet are dirty........if that's any consolation?

She just keeps herself clean, bless her. Her feet are only dirty because I grease them up to the fetlocks with udder ointment (like a thick vaseline) to prevent mud fever.

my very own walking disco! (pink flashing light tabard - makes me smile but causes maximum embarrasment to horse and hacking partners)

Here's mine:

But have since added this hat cover!!!

YES THAT IS GRIMACE ON MY FACE!!!! HATE JUMPING SCARES ME TO DEATH BUT ITS SUCH A BUZZ AFTERWARDS - it was this horses first ever show and propper jumps too!!!

I'm the local Hi-Viz Queen

Here is Ella without any hi viz standing next to a hedge

Much brighter now:

And from the front - (I know her bling browband is aimed at ponies, not 17 hh clydesdales, and children under 10, not grandmothers like me - but I love it

Interesting. You posted this picture before of you hacking out with barely any Hi Viz.

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/sh...rue#Post2731646

I know you said you'd lost your vest but personally I wouldnt be hacking on a lane like that with so little Hi Viz. Then a week later boasting about your Hi Viz
confused.gif
Granted you have a grey pony but your clothing blends into the hedges and makes you an accident waiting to happen.

Ever thought of getting a Hi Viz exercise sheet??

I love my HiViz, no pics but think walking Christmas tree...a mismash of yellow and pink, covering most squaare inches of horse and rider. Plus a grey pony and rider who loves pale jods and you have us!!

You can go back and look at ANY other photo of me hacking Patches and I ALWAYS had a full yellow vest on. Some pictures I had yellow leg wraps on as wel, but they lost their high viz over time so I stopped using them.

I was actually wearing a high viz shoulder band that day as well as my hat band and don't try and tell me you couldn't see me on my horse, because you clearly could to make any comment.

I have an exercise sheet but it's blue and only has reflective strips on it. The stuff I'm wearing now is a recent investment, I will grant you that, but I'm not boasting about wearing high viz. That sounds so God damn childish.

Can I also ask you what you mean by "a lane like that"? You have no idea where I live or the level of traffic I experience from one tiny snap shot.

I'm also loving how your link highlights the name Patches because you so desperately did a search for the "interesting" picture.

Go on, do another search and find all the pictures of me wearing my vest which I genuinely had lost that day......you won't find any more hacking pictures of me without it.

I love the leg wraps

I have a Hi-Viz vest and also a coat for very cold days (it's too heavy for milder days) I must get some Hi-Viz for the ponio though. She's a grey too, but never looks as clean as Patches!

Your post suggests you always wear that amount of Hi Viz, which clearly you don't. I'm not suggesting you never wear Hi Viz except for being photographed, I'm merely pointing out that perhaps that level of Hi Viz would be better on every hack, not just on occasion.

I do not know where you live, or what the volume of traffic is, but it isnt just cars that need to see you.

The leg bands make all the difference. In the previous photo you are barley visible, and this was my point. It is a good exapmle of how a few leg bands can make you much more visible.

I would have thought, with you being so pro Hi Viz (and a mother) you would have seen the obvious difference in the photos and used it as an example instead of reacting in that manner. Traffic volume, or where you live makes no difference and just sends out a bad message to others. You could have used this as a good example to other members instead you chose to make excuses.... which is exactly what people who don't wear Hi Viz do.

I simply remembered a post you'd made last week. There was no desperate search.

I'm sorry if I touched a raw nerve...

The only pics I've got with hi-viz on are from a mag:
http://www.gallopmag.co.uk/photogallery/...and%20Gemma.JPG

For day hacks I put an orange neck-band on Meg, and wear either a pink or yellow tabard.

At night I wear the pink tabard (as it lights up), an arm light, and Meg has 4 flashing, white reflective leg bands on, and an extra 2 orange ones on her hind legs.

If it's raining I use a yellow exercise sheet, but that's not very often since I'm becoming a fair-weather rider.

Charlie,

What do you wear? You haven't actually said.

Whilst the OP may or may not be offended by your comments I think you've laid it on a bit thick! Was it really called for? I thought the OP was just saying what does everyone else wear- although I've put pics of what I wear most of the time there is the odd day when I've washed bits and they're not dry or I leave the house in a hurry and forget them. Are you telling us all that you're perfect?

I have yet to meet someone who is perfect and never ever makes a mistake!

Where exactly am I making any excuses and how am I the same as people who are anti high viz? You say I clearly don't always wear that amount of high viz. Well, I can emphatically tell you that I've had Patches for 2 1/2 years and that was THE ONLY time I have EVER not had a proper vest on. The one and only. Your post makes it sound as me not wearing much is more the norm, which is totally incorrect.

What's with the reference to me being a mother....are you now suggesting I'm a bad mother because I lost my high viz vest for ONE hack a week or so ago and have only just bought some new leg wraps to replace the elastic ones that lost their "glow"?

I personally don't feel that it is necessary to wear every item of high viz that is in production to make you more obvious to cars. I think I am perfectly visible in a tabbard and a hat band. Yes, I do like the leg wraps and I shall wear them EVERY time I ride. Why would you think I'd only wear them "for the occasion"?

I certainly did not tack up and put the high viz on just to stand in the yard and have my photo taken. You say that's not what you're suggesting but then go on to say I should wear what I have on today on every hack, not just for an occasion.....which I take to mean just posing in the yard for a photo.

Agreed, Michelle - it all seems a bit...well, personal - is there something else going on here ?

I don't wear hi-viz when i hack out, mainly because I only currently go in two fields on the estate, and NEVER on the roads. I am however an adult, and can make the choice whether or not to wear hi-viz as i choose. If I was going on the roads, i would of course make sure I was very visible.

Charlie, why the holier than thou attitude?
Any hi-viz is better than none, why should Patches, or anyone, have to justify themselves to you? I hardly think putting up a photo, which every one does now and again to illustrate a point, counts as boasting.

blush.gif
I don't wear any, I have no need to, therefore I don't.....there you go Charlie, have a go at me instead. I am not saying that it isn't wise, or necessary, and think that some hi-viz should actually be law, on a public highway.

You haven't touched a raw nerve, I'm not that sensitive, but you are giving the wrong impression of me as a rider to insinuate that the post you linked to is how I normally ride out on Patches. It clearly is not, as was stated on that post. A point which is also easily proven by searching further back to older posts made.

I was hardly wearing NOTHING high viz. I might have been in dark clothes, but Patches most certainly is highly visible being the colour that she is. The first thing I often notice about dark coloured horses that are coming towards me, through gaps in the hedges, are their blazes or white socks. It's often the only thing I see. So whilst I might have blended into the hedge more in the dark jacket, Patches most certainly did not.

Had I had a black horse and couldn't find my vest, I wouldn't have ridden out. Period.

ps....Here's my daughter on her pony in her high viz yesterday

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/2747196/an/0/page/1#2747196

As you can see, high viz doesn't always show up well on camera. Her hat band and vest are brand new ones (not because didn't have any, but because she broke the buckle on her old vest and it was also losing it's brightness over time...before you question that) They are very bright, but the camera really doesn't pick it up that well a that angle.

When I walk out with her, I again wear my tabbard and hat with hat band.

I cant believe that wearing "High Viz" can become so personel??

I was only telling someone yesturday about how nice the H&H forum is too and now a post of this nature has had a taste of witchyness?

I'm so sorry foxend, I didn't mean to offend you or any other member with my comments.

I just wanted to convey the point that I do normally wear more high viz than just a hat band and shoulder strap. I am horrified if I have given the impression that I only used what I had on today just for a photo session.

.........and I am being witchy because it doesn't seem to matter what the subject is someone always has to make a sarky comment when it really isn't necessary at all. My comment wasn't necessary either I was only lowering myself to the level of the original sarky commentator, and I apologise to others for that.

HHO actually IS a decent place to visit, but it's like every community, you can't please all the people all the time, and on occasion we just have to agree to disagree on views, or don a tin hat when wielding a wooden spoon.

Patches, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of you hacking where you haven't been wearing Hi-Viz. Even on the day you had lost your vest you were still wearing 2 Hi-Viz items so I am not really sure why you are being criticised for it.

Me neither Sunflower, because I've just realised that Charlie is infact a well known (banned) member who can't possibly have failed to notice that I normally wear a more traditional high viz vest. She's been on HHO long enough to know that.

Charlie (or should we call her xXKatyXx) is pretty harmless really I think. I'd not have retorted had I realised who she was as Katy's posts always seem to descend into an argument for some reason.
