When I got to B this morning the wound had opened up and looked rather nasty. Don't know if she'd caught it on something in the stable and opened it up or it was just the swelling that had distorted it, but it had started bleeding again and the whole area was swollen and hot.

Vet has had to come out and give her two sedative injections, a tetanus and a shot of anti B's, plus bute and oral anti-B's. Despite two shots of sedative, a twitch and me hanging onto a front leg she still managed to take several swipes at the vet

She's got to be box rested for a week to start with and see how it goes from there. The vet said it didn't look like a kick injury which has got me puzzled.

I have somewhat calmed down and apologies have been made to the YO. He in turn apologised for not contacting me and/instead of my mum. I have asked that he contact me in future and have made sure all my contact details are up to date with him.

I am still somewhat of the belief that if B had been left well alone then she would not have been injured. Her field companion is both dominant and protective, known to be aggressive at times, and a 13 year old girl who is not used to working with horses is not the person to be handling them in that situation. Both horses are fit, in hard work and oated up, and are not suitable to be handled by novices. I am thankful that she wasn't injured herself, to be honest, because I know the old sod and he's come close to injuring me on a few occasions.

Still quite upset about it all, particularly now she is in pain and looking very sorry for herself. Will now also be on the receiving end of a hefty vet's bill

Like your vet says, that doesn't look like a kick site at all, more like she's sliced it on something like wire even if it might not be barbed or a stray nail, something sharp anyway unless she went past it at a rate of knots too. There isn't any galvanised about is there she could have caught it on?
Glad you've calmed down now; I read the post but didn't reply as it was too late.

We have been racking our brains trying to think what she could have caught it on. The field is thick hedge on all four sides, no wire at all. The gate is galvanised metal but I've felt it all over and there's no protruding edges. The water trough is the same and also far too low to have caused that, I would think.

Doesn't really matter how she did it, all that matters is that it is a fairly clean cut and should heal well. Vet was pleased that it was so high up well away from any joints. There is something of a pocket below it, quite deep, that he is concerned will fill up with fluid and delay healing but that can be sorted fairly easily if it happens.

That definitely doesnt look like a kick. I read your other post and you said that the girl had to walk B into town ... is there anything on the way e.g. barbed wire fence that she could have walked past and sliced her leg with?

Hope she feels better poor thing. I would get your mother to do the extra mucking out now that she is on box rest!

No not a kick. She has caught herself on something; nail, screw etc. That's a bigger injury than I was expecting, to be honest. The way I took it in your post yesterday was that it was just a cut rather than a tear.

Glad everyone is happy again. Has the vet packed the tear? One of my mares did this on a screw and we packed it full of Furicin. It was almost totally healed within a week, so B shouldn't be out of action for too long either.

Good luck - hope it heals well and quickly.

My mother is now away on holiday in Pisa for a long weekend

I do agree it's not a kick; it's too straight and clean and you can see where the straight line continues beyond the cut. There's no marks on her turnout rug, which is odd as her rugs come down very low being so small with a long back.

Please don't make me think it's a nail as I will end up scouring the knee-deep muddy field for them

There's no wire or anything on the way to the field, it's a quiet country lane with high leafy hedges and wide grass verges.

That looks nasty

You said in your other post that they had to take the staples out of the gatepost

- could this inexperienced girl have let her through the gate without it being open enough and B has somehow caught herself on a staple? Hope it heals well.

Gosh that looks nasty. My mare once came in with a huge hole though her flank - I spent nearly four hours scouring the field (it was only a tiny field) for what caused it and never found it.

It looks nice and clean tho (((hugs))) for B

There is no way that is a kick! The skin is usually scraped away a bit.

That really looks like a slash type wound. I would do a thorough reccy of the field for loose bits of fence. Beau cut his bottom on a support wire for the phone pole in his old field!

I also agree about the kind handling your horse. While I trust mine, I would not let someone of that age deal with him - fine if he was theirs as it would be on their own head.

Also.....I would be expecting YO or the 'helper' to pay the vets fees!!

I was under the impression 13yrolds were NOT allowed to work with horses? am i wrong?

Quite possibly, though being the side it's on she would have done it on her way out of the field, not the way in, and thus you'd think they'd have noticed it as her feathers were bright red with blood!

Unless of course they are feigning ignorance, but I don't think I should be thinking like that right now.

Cazza, I don't think that could have caused it, as it's a very clean looking cut and I think an old shoe would have made more of a ragged puncture type wound.

I'm so glad it's a clean cut as vet thinks it shouldn't scar. Beauty's primary summer occupation is as a show pony so no scars is a good thing.

We have a horse who is naughty when injured, if you can't get near her to clean it use a big syringe full of cooled boiled salt water, that way you can direct it onto the cut. Salt water heals wounds like this really quickly.

I think I'd talk to the young girl. I don't mean nastily just ask her if B was O.K. when she was leading her into town did she play up at all. If B had this accident surely the girl would know. My horse would certainly let me know he he cut himself like that as I was leading him. But I'd check the fields in the hedgerows you never know what people chuck in them.

But I would certainly be looking for them to pay the vet bill.
