this is the 'sport' that the horses were used for. The only difference is that in this video a cart with wheels is used. Here in the north a sledge is used which makes it harder.

the commentator says that the horse fell due to putting a foot in a hole..my arse he did. Look how many men it takes to pull the cart back, it must weigh an incredible amount! These competitions are held in the summer when the temp can be anything up to 40 degrees and 90 per cent humidity.

I don't know how some people can live with themselves. I think I'd be inclined to say your OH will be saving them from more of that.

and who was it that said that the Palio (road race) isn't bad and shouldn't be stopped, after all, it is a tradition. Many horses suffer the same injury and worse every year throughout Italy. The horse in the video is probably on his way to the local slaughter house and not the clinic. Unless he is slaughtered in a slaughter house his carcass has no value. Most of the horses which run in the palios are TBs and a lot originating from GB.

Poor horse, what a horrible way of doing things. I don't understand why you would pull the cart backwards??? Surely something like this makes more sense where the horses pull a heavy weight a very short distance (forwards)

Is that more like the sort of thing that happens around you? As these horses do look very well trained and in good shape to pull the heavy weights. The horse on your video did not. Still, it's a lot of strain on the horses obviously, but then so is racing. Unfortunately people abuse the horses nature on a daily basis throughout the world.

At least your OH can make sure those horses have a safe and comfortable last journey. Better than most 'waste' horses get.

Are there other videos of horses pulling it successfully.

I am just not sure that I can see it as that different to the 'horse pulls' that take part in other European countries and the U.S. Where they are obviously trying to push their horses to their limit this guy can't pull the last load, though I do like when he gets a pat on the bum http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chuYUMaZ9a0&feature=related but am not sure from your vid that I can just assume that doesn't happen in Italy to make a proper opinion.

Somethingorother I assumed they were rolling the wheels back because this would get rid of some of the inertia of the cart and likely make it easier to pull forwards.
 
This is what we see here in NA.

I am not sure what to make of it, I can only comment on what I have seen with my own eyes, and that is that all the horses I have ever seen have all been in excellent condition, keen (hmmm?) to get on with the job, and I have never seen one bought to its' knees or fall - not saying that it doesn't happen of course. I've (personally) seen racehorses looking more distressed after a race than any draft horse after a pull.

Your 'version' seems to use much lighter boned horses, that clip is most unsettling. I think there is a distinct difference using horses for proper draft work and the kind of thing your clip shows, I couldn't stand and watch that. Presumably, as in all things, money talks?

Sad as it is, I think the horses your OH is moving are the fortunate ones, better a swift bullet than a "who knows what?" future.

I don't think so from watching it numerous times. they didn't just pull it back a bit, they kept pulling with no sign of planning on stopping. I wouldn't be surprised if they often pulled horse over doing that. I imagine it would be much easier for a horse to pull an inanimate object forwards itself than to resist backwards force.

It doesn't look like it has much fight in it from the start to be honest, looked frightened and confused more than anything.

This is the first time something posted on here has paid be cry in horror.

Absolutely sickening. HOW was this allowed to happen?! The poor thing should of been PTS on the spot

Sickening to watch, poor,poor horse :( i couldnt believe they pushed him up that ramp, he must have been in absolute agony - what is this road race in italy all about? sorry, but i've never heard of it
