Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted kind thoughts and messages of support. This is helping me a lot. Yes I'm glad I was with him at the end. I have another horse, my ID x gelding. At least I can focus my attention with him and will love him more.

Lets enjoy our horses, folks. Each horse is special in their own right and only come our way once in our lifetime. I've cherished every second I spent with Shands (aka Shandy) - our potted history started with gymkhana games, clear round jumping, 'proper' SJ upto 3'3", some XC, hunting, 12 riding holidays, long distance riding, showing and dressage. I rode him until last year when I retired him and today he had a lovely day grazing in the warm sun. Indeed, RIP my boy.

Now its my turn to return positive vibes and hugs to you all and your horses. Cherish every second and dont dwell on whether he/shedidnt get a clear round or blew up in a dressage test. They're horses...we're humans...to err is human..to forgive is divine. They forgive us for our mistakes. Enjoy them and laugh with them, they'll love you tenfold for that.

thanks for that - i really needed that post after today

when i put Frankie away in his box after our 'disastrous' ride tonight, i untacked and started crying. He just turned around, gave me a nudge and a sniff and waited for his dinner

oh no youve just set me off again, tears everywhere, thats so nice and your rite,as much as my boy was a pain today when trying to dress his foot i couldnt tell him off,his face said it all and i just couldnt be angry no matter how bloomin frustrated i was lol i love him dearly and gave him a big hug once it was done

Just read your other post, so sorry to hear of your loss, RIP Shandy. What a wonderful tribute to him you have written and a timely reminder to all of us to cherish our horses. Sending you hugs.

Thanks for that. Actually I do give my girlie a great big hug and kiss every evening and tell her she is the best thing in my life and that to say thank you for allowing me to have some of the most enjoyable times of my life that would not have been possible without her.

I know I am a soppy old thing but you are quite right, they are horses and they don't understand our frustrations about what they are or are not doing right for us.

You are so lucky that you can list the things you have done and achieved with Shandy, so much, all that enjoyment, all those miles, all that relationship. You were lucky to have eachother, not many people - and relatively few horses - are lucky enough to have that "together for life" relationship.

HOpe my boss doesn't walk in now and find me sniffling.

RIP Shandy. Enjoy your new horse, you will never forget Shandy.

I too am sniffling at your lovely words. It is times like this when we all need reminding of the importance of making the most of every day with our horses. You are very brave and Im sure your words will help many people who are facing the same heartache as you have.

Thank you. Today is first day without him and yes I miss him. Didnt go to work today, too emotional. Went to yard to ride my other horse, made me focus on him. Difficult time was feed time - no inquisitive little face whickering for his feed. Those times will be the hardest.

Once again thank you to everyone who has posted - it has made me feel more positive and easing the pain of loss.

Best wishes to everyone and their horses. xxx
