I have a nice turnout, not old but is leaking after about only 2 years light use.
Just ordered some nikwax reproofer. I’ve never tried reproofing myself before, I know it just go’s into the washing machine but am just wondering if it surely doesn’t get rinsed out as the machine will “use” it as detergent and then run through rinse and spin after adding it.
Am I looking too much into this ? or is there a better way of doing it?

I don't wash mine I think it makes them leak I brush off as much dirt as I can with a stiff brush then paint with fabsil gold, I use liners with my rugs so the inside of the rug is basically clean.

I wouldn't put a turnout rug in a household machine it will probably get too heavy and the filth that will end up in the machine would be terrible.

I pour the nikwax directly onto the outside of the rug laid on the floor in dry weather, brush it in well and let it dry.

I use nikwax in washer to do thin outdoor rugs only .I add it to the last rinse .
It works just fine I then spray the top of the rug ( as in down the top of the horses back ) with fab sil the time I put it on the horse

Thick rugs have Fabsil applied and lightweights go in the machine with Nikwax.
I no longer have mine professionally cleaned and reproofed. Local rug cleaning businesses seem to have been taken over by a rug trashing goblin over the last couple of years.

I have a separate machine that’s allowed filth! It’s only a light weight so will be fine.

I’ve not heard of Fabsil, will take a look at that. I’ve ordered some nikwax for now though so think I’m going to go with @Goldenstar’s adding it at the rinse idea.

Had a quick Google. Fabsil looks good but would it effect the breathability of a turnout rug? It sounds like it’s more designed for tents/umbrellas that don’t need to be breathable.

I never use any brush on mine as damages the water seal, i hose off with sprayer then reproof when dry with Lincoln reproofer. Best I found so far https://lincolnhorsecare.com/product/lincoln-weather-proofa-universal/

Thats OK then about the machine I was just thinking how I would explain mud and hair encrusted pants to my oh ? after I had washed a few turnout rugs in our machine.

I find the fabsil good I just apply it with a big paint brush but they do a spray can version now so may try that.

The bit that annoys me is that I bought a second larger machine because of the obvious dirt and hair. Now most of the time I go to use it and it’s full of OH’s work clothes because all he seems to have forgotten how much he hates horse stuff in the wash ?‍♀️?‍♀️

We have a canvas Bell Tent and use fabsil reproofer on that (sprayed on with a pump action weed sprayer), the canvas needs to be breathable as well as waterproof and the fabsil does a great job. I’m planning to do the same with my turnouts this winter. The water just beads off the tent so I have high hopes for the rugs ?
