My Stables have been up for 11 years and the roof has really started to leak and needs replacing.

I have 6-12x12 Stables a 12x12 haybarn and a large corner tack room.

We phoned the original Stable Manufacturers and they have said it would take a day and a half to replace and cost £6000.

I think it is an awful lot of money just for the roof.

Should i shop around or stick to the original manufacturers?

If i do shop - any recommendations or know what i should 'google' to get some info?

What is the current roofing?

My immediate recommendation would be Onduline (bitumen impregnated corrugated roof sheets), its light, easy to fit (including DIY) and should last 20 years plus. And safer than tin/roof tiles if it ever does blow off in a hurricane. You can get diff colours too, not just black,

If you want to do a proper job I would recommend that underneath the onduline you use OSB board to line the roof, (and if you can stretch to it, breathable roof membrane), This will keep the roof waterproof even if the onduline comes off or is damaged, insulate the stables and stop the structure being damaged in a storm.

Our stables have been up 4 years and with the above roofing have stood up to the worst NE Scotland on a hill overlooking the Cairngorms can throw at it, which speaks for itself!

Stable cos are often only interested in initial putting up rather than maintenance, I would contact a local joiner/roofer or two as well. Your quote does sound expensive I have to say...

I've just had 5 stables & tack room re-roofed. I actually took onduline & under-board off as it had reached the end of it's life (about 20 years). I have replaced it with plastic coated square section tin.. About £1000 for the tin & fixings and around £1300 for local builders to take the old roof off and put the new one on. About £350 for skips to take the rubbish away. So £6K is probably a bit OTT

Forget the Onduline (which is basically bitumen treated cardboard) and replace with painted box section. I roofed a 30ft x 12ft stable block myself with some "reject" sheeting from my suppliers for well under £1,000. The sheeting was an odd size and a cancelled order. But then I'm a human magpie and allergic to parting with money!:D

I've just had a new yard built , with 4 stables , tack room and 24 x 12 barn , and my stable man used the plastic coated tin as well . Apparently costs about the same as onduline , but lasts pretty much forever , and because its white underneath , seems to reflect the light much more in the stable . The cost of the time was a shadow over 2k , and a days work to fit it , which is about £500 , so would say that £6k is way over .

Would bet that the quote is that high , to make you think it's more economic to replace the whole stable , rather than just the roof . Or maybe I'm just suspicious old bag :D
