HI EVERONE,
I am new to all this but was wondering if anybody could help me.I have recently moved to a new place and my stables are in a yard with flood/spot lights in the yard that come on when its going dark and stay on until the morning when it comes light again .
A good thing for security i guess but what about my horses ? They are used to being in the dark when stabled at night but i quite like the idea of them being able to see .Will it be harmful to them or will they be fine . I know light is used to alter mares breeding cycles etc and light alters the winter coat thing but is this a different kind if light .. ??
can anyone help ..

The first thing I would say, it what a waste of electricity... I cannot believe anyone would really want to leave the lights on all night ?

When we got burgled the policeman told us that security lights just make it easier for the burglars.

Secondly, why would you want your horses to have to lights on all night - they actually have very good night vision, so they don't need the lights on. They would also probably prefer to be able to relax and sleep at night too - I know my mare is fast asleep as soon as its dark.

I am sure they won't suffer, but it just seems a bit pointless.

Thanks for your reply , your mare must sleep a VERY long time then , it goes dark at 4. 00 in about a months time and stays dark until around 7.30 the following day thats 151/2 hours IN THE DARK . Horses actually cat nap for a few minutes per hour thay dont lie down and go to sleep for hours at a time like we do , it would be a nice thought to think we tuck them up in bed at night and they nod off to sleep for the night , but sadly not true , so i guess i just want my guys ..and girls to have more daylight hours in winter and was just enquiring to the posssibility of leaving the street lights in the yard on all night , it might seem a waste and pointless to you but if it makes my lot happier then I will do it. we are all different i guess but again thanks for the relpy .
