fined £60.

Thats it.

a £60 fine, the owner has spent over £400 trying to recover her mare and not even her costs have been covered by the culprit

the british justice system is a joke. this country is letting itself down its a bloody disgrace.

That's awful.

What about some compensation for the owner going out of her mind with worry? Where's the deterrent in £60???

disgusting isnt it. i believe she is going to write to horse and hound to ask them to cover the story as surely this just isnt right?! the woman is also going to be named and shamed locally via the internet i certainly hope Big Birds owner tries to get the national magazines to name and shame her too. I'd certainly want to know if a theif was operating in my local area!!

Unbelievable! If the sod had stolen goods from a store, a car, defrauded the DSS to the amount that the horse was probably worth, they would have been sent down. Once again, the assumption seems to be made that horse owners are rolling in cash, so can afford losses. You expect better from the judicial system, but it never fails to disappoint. I hope the owner gets some success with her campaign.

That is totally outrageous. At least they got the horse back which is the important thing obviously but I would be so angry. I hope she does name and shame!

Fines like this will not deter the woman from doing it again.

Thats less than a weeks dole money I expect!

Absolutely bl**dy ridiculous. Makes a complete mockery of our justice system (or should that be INjustice system). I wonder if the owner can take out a civil(?) action to recover her costs from the thief?

it could have been worse
the horse owner could have been told to pay the thief 60 quid to cover his embarassment at havign to appear in court

you are right - there is no justice in this country - and not much interest by the Police in doing anything about rural crime

Would like to know more about the case before I comment. Did the person who took the horse return it? Was she and the owner in a dispute at all? Etc, etc, etc.

Still think the fine is ridiculous tho!

You get more for speeding

agree a £60 fine seems futile, but sorry had to say yes you may get more for speeding - it endangers lives!

Agree with Weezy - was it more complex than a thief breaking into a strangers yard & stealing the horse, then getting caught?

If so, I am disgusted, but feel I should reserve judgement..

at least the police bothered to get involved......

when we had a coloured stolen from the yard, WE had to find her, WE had to go in and get her back, and all the police did was say, well, you have her back, there is no evidence and they might have been looking after her..........
