I'm the opposite to those mentioned in Superkat's post. I would describe myself as reasonably experienced yet I don't spend every penny on my horse. I have a budget and I stick to it because I think that you need to have balance in your life. We are currently saving for a new house with land so that Daisy can live at home and to do that we need to be very disciplined.

It winds me up when people look at me like I'm something they've scraped off their boot because I have a synthetic bridle and saddle, Daisy's rug came from the market and my hat is a Dublin Orion.

if you want to spend every penny on your horse then fine but don't assume that other people don't love their horses because they don't lavish their cash on them

I agree with you totally. Each to their own and all that!! I can afford whatever I want for my nags/children/myself so I do and I refuse to feel bad about that. Equally, I've been in a position when I could barely afford the next feed bill so can appreciate both sides.

I've had plenty of comments about the tack I have for my horses at the moment and it really is vile the way no matter what you do theres always a whole string of vile commenrts about it....I'm looking forward to the day when the horse world no longer bitches about anything and everything

tbh i dont care what anyone says about my tack etc,as long as it all fits well & my horse is happy in it then stuff them all.

i buy what i can afford,if i want something i have to save up for it

Well I bought my horse for a sane amount of money, and I found that by riding 7 horses for other people on and off it saves my purchasing a 2nd horse
wink.gif

I cant afford to spend every penny on my horse because I am a poor student with a big love o my social scene. My parents put alot towards my horses, and help me fund the competition season on the others I ride, but that doesnt mean I should want my parents to fork out full wack. My bug bear is that thought "everything needs to be new, and it needs to match. Murph's owner gave me a pair of sabre tendon boots, which are so beautiful, obviously a good few years old, but she loved them and they were in such top spec condition. I sjed in them a few weeks back and my friend really turned her nose up at the fact I had black tack and brown boots. WTF? Why, why would I spend top deal on something I already have. Irritating.

As they say 'All the gear and no idea' spending heaps on horse gear doesn't make him a better horse, you a better rider or owner... although *i say buying a new rambo * it can help...

I enjoy spending money on mine, but i am now taking to spending alittle bit on me... But i enjoy a rambo more then the lastest ipod... i think

Your right, it doesn't make you a better rider or owner, but if you buy you horse the best stuff and don't do much (i.e. just hacking, a few local unaff shows etc) pople shouldn't make comments on what you have which is what I was saying in my original post.

Everything my horse owns matches, it is ALL black and gold. She has about 15 rugs which are all black bound gold - a good few are custom made and she has all 3 weights of the rambo supreme in black and gold to go out in. I have been known to spend three times on items to get the colour I want. All her tack is black leather with all meatal work being brass - the buckles on the girth, my stirrups, the bits (kk aurigan), all the buckles on the bridle etc. Her headcollars are black leather with bress buckles. Exercise sheets are black bound gold (thermatex's so didn't cost extra for those), all her grooming brushes are black, she has to eat out of a black bucket and a black haynet. I worry sometimes that I am OCD about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

The point is though that I do this because I want. I would NEVER do it because I thought that other people think I should. I want to, so I will. I would never think badly of anyone who wasn't like me (I often wish I wasn't!!) andEqually I wouldn't expect people to judge me because I want my horse to have the best of everything and I want it to match.

This may change though because my parents 100% fund everything and they can afford to let me have what I want for my horse. At some point after graduation I will have to take on the rsponsibility and may not be able to have quite everything I want - I won't be bothered though........While I can have nice matching things I don't see why I shouldn't but if I can't it's not the end of the world as long as my horse has what she needs.

Totally agree ~ Been on both sides, money to burn, and bought cr*p I thought i "should" have ~ and wasted it ~ couldn't ride for toffee ~ and had pants horse!

Been skint, and shopped at Lidl's ~ where I bought the best water buckets ever! ~ what I saved i spent on good lessons, and great horse (which lives in a 2nd hand rug) ~ lesson learnt

Well I dont compete at all really (apart from the every 6 months show at my yard!) and thats only £12 entry for like 10 jumping rounds and chase me charlie!

Pickles stufff doesnt match at all! He gets what he is given he doesnt give a dam! I do have nice tack but mainly because my dad shares pickle with me. (and dad has a rather big arse as does pickle) that saddle was hell to fit had to be wide and have a HUGE seat!! I have bright blue tendon boots, mainly green saddlecloths/numnahs but also have a blue one with monkeys all over it (xmas pressie) Pickles rugs all came with him personally I think he would never have some of the brands of rugs he has if I had bought them!!! As I dont compete I have no need for expensive anything all my riding is what most people call exercise riding in there "exercise tack"

I'd rather appreciate money. The money could go to such better use, i don't think i could be happy knowing my horses are kitted out in certian colours costing.... i hate to think while thier people/ and horses *thinks of those donkeys needing bits!* so poor around us! Ha ha thats my deap thought for the day.

If i was rich.. and didn't work for every item my lad has... i would get any colour and because i would'nt be poorer for it put money towards charities. As it is i work for them.

But your above post came across as you wouldn't be happy buying your horse a new item of equipment knowing that there are otherpeople who are so poor yet in your last post you said you'd buy the equipment

But you not buying stuff isnt actually going to benefit those causes unless you donate the money you would spend to a charity

To your first comment - buying nice things for their horse IS a good use of money for some people. Everytime anyone buys something they will subconciously concider the opportunity cost of buying it and so the fact that they did buy it means that they can not think of something they would rather have and they appreciate their purchase.
I would not choose expensive rugs over training for example or an education for myself as another but if I have everything that I want there is no better use.
My family gives a lot of money to various charities aswell (into the thousand's each year) so it is not instead of that either.

I have read the original post now and I don't see the problem with buying nice things for happy hackers / unaff horses. If I decided to be either of these things I'd still want a nice horse with nice things.

ditto.

Its each to their own isnt it? I spend a lot on my horse but its compensated by the fact that I dont really go out much.

It doesn't make me a better rider than a person who chooses not to do this, nor does it mean my horse is more loved - its just thats how I get my pleasure.

Similarly I can happily justify spending a lot of money on my riding clothes but I dont spend fortunes on my none riding wear. I was criticised for wearing cavallo jods at one yard and yet said person was strutting round in versace jeans which id never have dreamt of commenting on.

Riding is my only hobby and it's where I choose to spend my money. 90% of my Christmas / birthday presents will always be horsey related because thats what I want. I dont think anyone has the right to look down on anybody else whether they choose to go all out on expensive, flashy equipment (regardless of whether they compete), or they choose to be more practical and as long as it fits the horse, I seriously doubt he / she cares.

i think if you have the money then go ahead and spend as much as you like. I have a synthetic saddle, leather bridle (kincade) and NONE of my rugs match. I have a black one a beig one, a blue one, a green cooler and with the brown tack i have black brushing boots and a matching set of travel stuff which came with her. I only have what i need - i have what is neccessary and nothing else - i only have one pair of brushing boots (i need another pair really) but no other boots as they are not nessesary (sp)
it does not matter what you have as said before its how you ride and if the horse has what it needs and is happy

Ok... little shocked that your telling me that not giving to charity and spending it all black and gold is good! I'm not having CR argument... i was just saying i was shocked at how someone could spend ponitless money like that, and although i come from a well off family, i have always appreciated money. I agree that spending money on your horse brings great pleasure hence i save up my money and buy my horses the best i can afford, and don't by things for my self becasue of this. But i get pleasure from it.

At what point have I told you that not giving to charity is good?
You said you couldn't buy equipmet without feeling bad about all of the poor people, I asked you that if you had the choice to buy a new bridle or give the money to charity, you said bridle.
People buying nice things for their horses isn't spending pointless money, are parents who are buying their cihld new clothes spending pointless money? No.

Erm, where is she saying that?!
confused.gif
She's saying that at the moment she can afford to do so, and chooses to do so. What's wrong with that?! I am struggling to understand most of your posts tbh.

Arhhh.... i think this is all a bit f*** with people reading each other wrong... i didnt say bridle
confused.gif
I don't even have a bridle
crazy.gif
I'm all for spending money for your horse i just think people loose the point and go over board with matching this and that....And its just what i think...

whats to get worked up about?
blush.gif

To the point of the post.... if you don't spend loads on your horse credit to you!
grin.gif

I thought you bought your horse a bridle for christmas...?

I thought the point of both threads was in fact it doesn't matter a damn if people choose to spend every penny they earn of their horses, or if they keep them on a budget - so long as the animal is cared for then it's no one else's business!!

Wow, this turned a bit nasty, lol.
IMO, YOUR cash is YOURS.Do as you please with it.No-one has the right to tell another person wat to do with their hard earned, some people will give to charity, some will pi55 it up the wall others will spend it on somethig the love(ie horse).Nothing wrong with that at all.

R gets new stuff he could easily live without every week while there are children who dont even have clean water. My choice to spend it that way and I dont feel guilty about it.
Of course spending silly amounts on matching everything wont make you better in any way but if you want to whats wrong with it?
It doesnt matter fi the horse is kept on a budget or if it has every penny thrown at it as long as the horse is happy/healthy and the owner isnt miles in debt!

I've known very lean times but my horses/dogs basic needs always came before me and hubby. They can not choose. We didn't starve ;-0 but we did go without holidays, nice cars, clothes etc.
We have always worked hard to earn our money so now things are better again if we want to splash out on them we will!!! It really annoys me when other folk 'comment' on what I spend especially as a quietly get on with it and never 'show off' . To add insult the worst offender is looking to buy a £800,000 plus house and tells us how she loves 'stroking' her mink coats but scrimps on straw to save a few pence, the ammonia is awful, and her horses rugs are fit for the tip.
