The future of the Amersham equines

Operation Esther is organising a peaceful and dignified gathering of horse lovers outside Oxford Magistrates Court, for 2.30pm Monday 14th April.

This gathering is to show support for the Amersham equines. Appropriate banners and placards are welcomed.

Operation Esther wishes to emphasise that the credibility of this gathering relies on it being peaceful and dignified throughout.

Any like-minded people who wish to join us are welcome to do so, thereby showing their support for the equines.

Please let us know, either by posting on here or by PM. (Some idea of numbers makes it easier to plan).

Copied from the Operation Esther website:

Operation Esther has taken high level legal advice, regarding the gathering in Oxford, Monday.

"A peaceful gathering outside Oxford magistrates court could be of benefit to the equines.

Any other sort of behaviour would work to the detriment of the equines, so it is essential that those attending remain calm and dignified throughout the time they are in Oxford."

OE cannot stress this strongly enough and hope all those attending will cooperate with this, for the sake of the equines.

My friend and I belong to Oxford Area Bridleways Group. We shall be coming tomorrow. I have another friend who knows a BBC south reporter. Shall I ask her to contact him to do a story?
We can't believe the equines could be sent back to JG. We must do anything to prevent this

Hi NanaHarley

Yes, I think it would be well worth asking your friends contact for a story - as long as he's aware it will be a peaceful protest and our only aim is to prevent the return of the equines until after the welfare case has been heard.

See you there.

Fingers crossed. I cannot be with you but my thoughts are with you and the equines. Good Luck. There's over 17,000 signatures on the petition. Let's hope we can get to 20,000 by midday tomorrow.

A nice lady on the Facebook group has being rousing the media. She definateley has some radio bods there and I think a reporter. I know she's had a bash at the local TV crew too. I'm pretty sure that this is going to be well reported.

Good luck everyone!!

I think it is vital, if we want public support, to make it known that we are nothing to do with animal rights activists.

Most people will make a connection (They are the scourge of Oxford) To get sympathy in the long run, to support the Animal Welfare Act we need public opinion on our side.

I think you are out of order there Neal.

Animal rights activists do a lot of good work......that covers the RSPCA and many other organisations who actively campaign for Animal Rights.

An active 'Animal Rights Campaigner' who runs 2 Charity Shops for the Welfare of Animals, (so she is an active campaigner), gave £1000 to Operation Esther for the Amersham Horses campaign which was then passed onto the Horses Trust.

I think Neal may have been referring to the extreme activists who are known for, shall we say, less than peaceful demonstrations.

In which case, he is right, we should be distanced from them. We are aiming for a peaceful protest to show our feelings on the matter.

Unfortunately, whether the tabloid press will distinguish between the two is a different matter, so we do need to be careful to keep reiterating that we're a peaceful group

Thanks to all who have sent us good wishes. We'll get news to you as soon as we can!

Animal Welfare is what most people think of as the mainstream charities.

Animal Rights is what most people think of as incendary deveices in fur coats in shops etc.

Agree with Neal

OE is delighted at the decision made at Monday's case at Oxford Magistrate's Court.

The 'stay' on the order ensures the current welfare of the equines.

The judge listened to applications from both sides and made a just decision. He deserves praise for his fairness and bravery.

The RSPCA and other equine welfare charities will continue to work to secure the future welfare of the equines.

OE wishes to thank all those who attended Oxford Magistrates Court for the peaceful gathering yesterday, and also the many who have written letters and signed the petition supporting these equines.

OE is an equine welfare interest group. It has no links whatsoever to animal rights groups.

OE wish to point out that any monies which may have been donated by individuals during the OE fundraising drive for the equine welfare charities, went direct to the charities concerned.
