Does anyone know of a way to re dye or darken a traditional style show cap? It has just got faded over the years but the velvet is in ok condition and leather harness good so I don't see the point in buying a new one! Any ideas please?

Thank you, that was what I was worried about that whatever I use will run in the wet... Bearing in mind the recent weather a wet proof solution would be good! Will try steaming it to clean though. Anyone else got ideas on a black permanent dye solution please?!

If the velvet is non-synthetic then a dye would work - you'd need to paint it on - if it is a synthetic then a dye may still work - but with both the dye would still run initially. X

I think it is non synthetic, cost over 100 quid (I didn't pay that as was in a sale!) and this was ten years plus ago so would imagine proper velvet. Will give it a go, what's the worst that can happen?! Thanks!

If its over 10 years old I would think a new one would be safer ? Considering a new hat is recommended after any drop or fall, unless you are the most careful person in the world :D also the hike in safety standards l, it may be a good oppertunity to buy new in the January sales !

'The Kitemark' Website advise as follows:-

" Riding hats should always be replaced immediately if they suffer a severe impact such as from a fall or being dropped onto a hard surface as although no visible damage may be seen, any severe impact to the riding hat can result in diminished protection. In addition the protection offered by any riding hat diminishes over time as the padding inside becomes compressed and so any riding hat should routinely be replaced every 3-4 years even if there are no visible signs of damage".

If you've had the hat for the period of time you say it may be best to invest in a new one.
