Some of you know I found a shard of metal in my bag of feed. Under some advice I decided to post the thing to the feed company- I decided to register it because I didnt want said feed company to say they never got it. Post office told me I couldnt because it could be dangerous, so i called them, and they told me "It was impossible for that to have happened" they have metal detectors and something that size could not have slipped through. Well I can assure you it did not fall into an open bag- so what I was hoping you lovely HHO'ers could do is provid other instances where you have found things in your feed bags, anything would be good, but particularly metal. I felt as though she was saying I was making it up- but I am even willing to drive 47 miles to drop the damn thing off to them, but I need to show them, that these things do happen. So your help would be very much appreciated. I will not be showing them this post, but just reeling off examples to them when I see them next week. Thank you.

If they are not interested I had this with a food manufactuer I contacted trading Standards then they were very interested and appologiesed and looked into how it happened.

Sorry but only found vouchers in my horse feed bags so far.

I found a pice of heavy metal, a half circle about 12" diameter, in a bag of dog feed once. Contacted the manufacturers who said the same thing, they have magnets etc, and couldn't have happened, so I sent it to them. They said it came from their packing machinery, but didn't give me any refund or vouchers etc. Miserable people!!!

I would write the managing director of the feed company a letter with a picture of the piece of metal in it stating that you have contacted trading standards and are prepared to got to your local newspaper with your story if you dont receive a satisfactory reply from them. I know you may think they wont be bothered by threatening to go to the paper, but if you tell the feed manufacturers you live in a community brimming with horsey folk im sure they will respond promptly!!!

I know its not the same but its similar, i used to work for a well known bakery in the laboratories testing the products. We used to deal with the complaints re items found in there products. Despite many metal detectors it is extreemly common for things to get missed so they are just fobbing you off!!!!

Found a moth in a tube of toothpaste once!!!! Yuk

They said it was impossible to get a moth in the factory as they had screens on all the windows. Mmmmm.

Lucky it didnt get stuck between my teeth.

Also found (rather merlin found) a piece of sharp plastic in his feed (not in bag) so not absolutely sure it was in bag so did nothing about it.

Ok not quite the same but I once found a load of dead baby rats in a bag of feed.

I brought the bag back to the feed merchants and apparently rats had chewed through some of the bags and one of the guys had just sewn it back up

Obviously a mother rat decided a bag of course mix was a nice place to have her babies and then they got sewn back in

I wrote to headquaters aswell and got a very apologetic letter and a 100 euro voucher and the guy who just sewed the bags shut after obvious rodent damage got fired. I don't use them anymore though. Actually thinking back on it, I probably would have just cause to make a bigger fuss, if the horses or even myself got sick from rat pee it would have been very serious.

i had about half of a dead pheasant pickeled in a bag of haylage, from a well known company, i shoved it in a jiffy bag and sent it back to them!! TBH i would wrap the metal up well in bubblewrap, pop it in a jiffy bag and sent it - just don't tell the post office what is in it!

i have to ask what you hope to acheive by sending this to them, or taking it there. If it is to bring it to their attention, then I would just wrap it and post it and let them make of it what they will, if they think you are after some kind of compensation they will hold out til hell freezes over

i had shredded string in one of my bags...said company were very good i sent it along with the batch number and they were very apologetic and sent me voucher for a replacement bag.

I would not worry about it as it is not worth the bother. Your horse was not hurt and you found it...even if you do get a voucher of £5 off or something...big deal! Just be a bit more vigilant with the rest of the bag as you feed...these things happen and they never take responsibility for it!

I found handfuls of sharp flints in my bags of Hemcore bedding. Company insisted it couldn't happen as they had stone picking machines in the line. However, they did send a man and van out to take away my entire 50 bales and replace with another batch, they also gave me an extra 10 bags free so I was quite impressed with their response in the end. TBH if they hadn't done this I would have lost faith in them and probably gone elsewhere. Where your horse is concerned you have to trust in the products you use.
