Reaching your insurance excess

This has not happened to me yet, but I was wondering what happens when you reach the limit of your vets fees and dont personally pay for any more treatment (vet aware of limit) Do the insurance companies allow you to PTS if the horse would no longer be in a rideable condition and on constant box rest?

I think that what you are asking is - if you have reached the limit of the insurance fees and you don't want to spend any more, can you have the horse pts AND get the insurance co. to pay out on the mortality claim ?

They only pay the mortality claim if a vet says the horse needs to be pts for humane reasons. It has nothing to do with it being un-rideable or even needing box rest.

You always have the option to choose to have your horse pts...

Thanks for this as the Vet is saying they should try for less than 15% chance of returning to full work and am not sure of all the options so PTS with or without insurance (regardles sof money) is always an option

Shipley if you mean that you will soon be in this situation then I would wholeheartedly support you in putting the horse to sleep. Far too many people go on for far too long treating horses that never come right. Far too many people land themselves with bankrupting debt because they cannot bear to put a horse down who might just have a chance of coming right. You will be doing the right thing for yourself and your horse, do it with a clear conscience.

ps if it happens that your issue is anything in the "navicular syndrome" spectrum please reconsider as a barefoot rehab will often succeed, as it did with my own "maxed out" rehab earlier this year who had a date for being put to sleep.
