Hi

Yesterday Toffee had her annual vaccination ('flu and tet this time) and this morning she is very stiff in her hind quarters, is this a known reaction to the jab or is something else wrong? She was stiff walking across field and was yawning a lot this morning, I had arranged to ride with friend to see how she was, we walked and trotted her on level surface and she just seemed reluctant to move her back legs so just walked her home.

Her feed/routine hasn't changed and she seems ok in herself, just a bit quieter than normal.

There is no reaction where she was actually injected.

Her jab was around midday yesterday and I didn't ride after (short hack about 2 hours before vet came before and all ok)

She hasn't reacted to her vaccinations before.

I have phoned vets but closed at weekends, emergencies only, not sure if this counts as that or not so will see how she goes!

Any ideas?

I have known horses to be stiff in the neck after vaccs - its why my vets always do it in the chest. I think the stiffness wears off after 3 or so days.

My TB had a reaction to a flu vacc, an odemea formed and the bute I was given to sort it was paid for by the drug company so it is definately worth contacting the vet, even if you just ask them to call you back rather than having a very expensive call out fee, to check what their policy is on reactions.

Did the vet giev the vacc in the hindquarters? If so, the muscle could just be a bit stiff- I remember having vaccinations when I was younger and not being able to lift my arm up high for a few days.

Thank you both. She was injected in her chest, and there was no swelling/reaction around that area. She seemed better today so I did some gentle schooling just in case she stiffened up and I was stuck out on a hack but she was fine.
Will see how she is next year to see whether it was this or something else but I can't think of anything else it could have been.
