I was talking about an incident I had with my mare some years ago,and was wondering if anyone else had experience of bute allergies? My mare came in hopping lame,so the vet was called and administered an injection of bute, and left me sachets to put in feed.I returned to the yard that evening to find my girl flat out ,sweaty and struggling to breathe. As I had once owned a pony who had reacted similarly to penicillin,I knew she was having an allergic reaction and called the out of hours vet. They told me they would have to call me back ,and when they did I was offered an adrenaline injection with 50/50 chance of cure or kill. I declined this offer as I felt she had at least these odds without waiting for the vet to show up,and I was right,I still have her some 10+ years later. Some time after this I was told that it is a known side effect of bute injections to cause an allergy to the powder, and that I would not be able to use bute with her again, but can not find any information on this.I use danilon now,but am curious to hear if anyone has had a similar experience or if we were just very unlucky. Thanks for reading!

Danilon contains suxibuzone, which is converted into (primarily) phenylbutazone/bute by the horse's liver when eaten. This means that a horse allergic to bute would also be allergic to Danilon. I suppose it is remotely possible that she was allergic to one of the non-active ingredients.
