So my usual chaff was out of stock so I purchased some dengie hi-fi molasses free chaff, pony ate as normal but having only fed for a few days he has developed a dry cough, wind and is very breathless. Nothing else has been changed, same hay, same turnout etc, this is the first time he has eaten fenugreek and this chaff so I was wondering if perhaps he’s had a reaction? I’m going to take him off the food and see if that helps, but can’t find anything but good reviews about the benefits of fenugreek, anyone else had the same or could there be another ingredient that might be causing this?

Thanks

Any horse can have a reaction to anything, the same as people. The list of 14 common allergens on people food really annoys me, just becasue it isn't on the list doesn't mean I am not allergic to it! I have had horses react badly to alfalfa, everything except alfalfa, carrots, seaweed, Brewer's yeast, PinkPowder. The only way to tell is to stop giving the feed and then, if you really want to know what caused the problem, feed each ingredient individually for at least one week to see if the horse reacts.
It might take up to a month for your horse's reaction to subside. I hope he feel better soon.
