Has anyone had a horse colic 2or 3days after vaccination? My horse was injected in his chest and developed a fairly large, warm lump at the injection site, he was very lethargic the next day and obviously feeling a bit off, the day after that was brighter and I walked him out for half an hour, the third day he had a mild colic, he lives out 24/7, had no change in feeding or routine, and has never had a reaction previously. Vet didn’t think it could be to do with the jab but it seems a bit coincidental to me. I would be interested to know if this has happened to anybody else. Also not too sure how to deal with next years vaccination to try and avoid anything similar although next year will only be a flu jab so possibly not the same reaction

My horse always reacts to her vaccination. Usually swells up and stiffens and struggles to walk. in the past they have given her some finadyne at the same time to try to stop the reaction which did work. I haven‘t specifically seen a colic but you couldn’t completely rule it out. You will probably need to keep a close eye next year (although mine reacts worse to flu+tet than just flu) and if it happens again it would be too coincidental and you could discuss best option with the vet.

Sorry to hear about your poor horse. Mine had a football size swelling on his chest after a flu jab. It was clearly uncomfortable. Vet just said to give him bute for a few days. It took about two weeks to resolve. (no colic though thankfully)

Thank you all for your replies, hopefully the colic was nothing to do with the jab, although if it wasn’t I don’t know what caused it which is possibly more worrying. I have had him for 8 years and he’s never coliced or reacted to the jab before. He still has a lump but nowhere near as big as it was and is fine in himself again now thank goodness. Vet did say he was thinking of injecting in the neck in future and I think I’ll ask him about giving some Bute before and after to try and avoid the inflammation

I think it’s likely he moved a bit less because of his reaction to the jab and that caused the colic rather than it was a reaction to the jab itself .
Get him a finadyne jab with the vaccine or give him bute the night before and twice a day on the day of the jab and one the day after that usually does the trick and is cheaper than the jab .

I think I’ll have a conversation with my vet before next years jab to do as recommended re finadyne or Bute, he’s back to his normal cheeky self now but still has the swelling on his chest but it is smaller and doesn’t seem to be painful, hoping it doesn’t result in an abscess and that it will go down given time

Mine gets a swelling and his not been able to walk the next day but never had colic, I think we have tried every brand going but he still reacts to it, his still got a lump from his jab 3 weeks ago it's gone down a lot and at least he could walk after this one, I have given bute before and after the jab not sure if it really makes a difference or not.
