Herman had his KC vacc (the one up the nose) last Monday. Yesterday morning, he woke us up (he sleeps in a crate in our room) by making a bizarre snorty, snuffly noise - sounded like a cross between an asthma attack and an oinky pig.

He was fine and went back to sleep straight away (unlike OH and I, who laid there waiting for him to breathe his last) but all yesterday he was a bit :meh: and was quite happy not to go out, which is unlike him - we ended up not taking him out till half 7 (pm) but once we got to where we walk he had a whale of a time. It helped that his 2 bestest mates joined him there but no snuffling at all. He had a couple of snuffly moments during the day - normally when he's just done something 'strenuous' like running down the stairs or after barking.

So this morning he woke us up again (5am, thanks puppy) and OH got up to let him out the crate - he wouldn't come although if it isn't Herman's Getting Up Time then he won't get out of bed any earlier than he has to. He did come out eventually but did it again as he came out then came and curled up on the bed with me :badmother: He did it a couple of times while on the bed and they seemed to frighten him - he is a mummys boy and will come for cuddles if he's scared or unsure and he cuddled himself more into me, am as sure as I can be he wasn;t reacting to me reacting to him :dizzy: as I was almost asleep again by that point  So we've got up and he's now fast asleep on my foot - normally even if we've got up earlier he's waiting patiently for demanding his walk by now. Am unsure whether to take him for his walk even! He's been out for a wee but like I said, is asleep now - unlike him!

Vet job or has anyone else had anything like this? Have read that dogs can react to a Kennel Cough vacc by developing KC but not sure this is - he isn't coughing. I had the bright idea of recording him doing it but obviously he hasn't done it since. I'm almost tempted to take him to the vets anyway, but he gets superstressed there since he was neutered (wimp) so would rather avoid it if I can...

Please cross your fingers though it's nothing infectious/awful for him - he's going into kennels on Saturday night as I'm off to Muse I'm staying with my friend - selfishly I'm really excited about this gig and I'll be beyond gutted if he's poorly and I can't go.

Argh! I don't know what to do! He comes to work with me so I can at least keep and eye (and ear) on him all day.

Probably a good idea to phone the vet to check. KC doesn't always sounds like coughing as we know it. Mine had KC after a period in hospital. It can sound like retching or snorting/sneezing, or as mine often sounded, gagging and vomiting. However, I've no idea what reactions dogs can have to the KC vac.

Thanks both, I took him to the vets last night as he did it a few more times during the day. Apparently he has a chest infection, but they say it's unrelated to the KC vacc as that is more glandular?

So now, I have 10 joyous days of trying to get 2 x antibiotics down him ahead of me. Fingers crossed the kennels will still accept him - vets seem to think they will though.

Another name for kennel cough is canine infectious bronchitis = a chest infection. The glandular versions are more often parainfluenza.

The vet won't admit that BB intranasal can cause kennel cough but it is a well known problem and the reason that many kennels won'rt allow dogs in within a month of receiving this vaccine.

No decent kennel should accept him as he is.

Probably is the vaccination which is why I don't vaccinate for KC, both mine have had it being rescued so what's the point in taking a risk. If you titre tested most dogs they would have enough antibodies anyway.

Yes vaccination can cause the live disease and vaccinated animals can shed live virus.

Multiple vaccinations can be very dangerous if given at the wrong time i.e. when a animals immune system is busy fighting something else that you and the vet know nothing about.

Some vaccines do not cover the animal for a complete year yet are supplied in multivacs. Some of the preservatives used in the vaccine can seriously affect the animal.

We horrendously over vaccinate because the drug companies and vets like our money, many vaccines like Tet in horses last for years but they rarely tell you that!

Many vaccines have side effects ergo Swine flu and a direct link to Narcolepcy, some people now have their lives ruined for the sake of what amounted to a few days discomfort!!

Vaccinations can prevent some serious diseases BUT there is often a price and over vaccination can be as risky as none.

Got to admit my GSD doesn't get vacc against KC now as it interferes with her medication for allergies but last time she had the vacc, she was very poorly indeed very lethargic, was coughing a little, off her food etc. She went on antibiotics and the kennels accepted her after a week of tablets but only with a letter off the vets saying they had checked her out and she wasn't infectious or a risk to other dogs.
My Goldie has never encountered a problem with it.
Ring the kennels and check with them first :)
K x

The reason he had the vaccine was because this particular kennel insists on it - they know when he had it and know about his subsequent vet visit. They also know he's on antibiotics and they've got a quarentine kennel he can go in.

All good. Sort of wish though he'd just gone to the kennel he normally goes to (who don't ask for KC) and he'd (hopefully) be well - this is the first time he will have been to the new kennels.
