Reaction to routine Vaccs

My cob reacted to tet & flu vaccs on 20 Dec. A swelling started as soon as it was being administered in his neck so vet stopped & did in the other side of his neck deeper into muscle. He was given bute, but still has a hard lump the size of 50p on his neck.
He is 21 yrs old and I've had him since he was 3 and he has always been vaccinated and never reacted before.

Will the lump go in time?

I hacked yest for first time since and he is very lively so fine in himself.
 
My mums tb mare always reacts to her jabs, gets a lump is lethargic .. Doesn't like putting her neck down to eat. This time the vet gave it to her in her bum. Why not ring the vet to check if u r worried.
 
I've spoken to vets, in some cases lump has to be cut out.... just wondered if it'll giving its own. He is a show horse but obviously his well being is far more important. He only does VHS showing now.
 
i would back up your phone call with a letter about the vaccine reaction. the vets can claim back any extra drugs(like bute etc) from the vaccine company.(and further visits etc). horses can often react to the vaccine carrier. i never now have a vaccine into the neck or rump in case of a reaction, as neck/rump can go stiff/lumpy/abcess y. i always insist in vaccines being jabbed into the chest, as you can normally work through if a reaction occurs. was the vaccine maker the same as last year? poss not as flu is done annually and flu/tet biannually? as for the lump there i would massage it 2 to 3 times a day to help disperse (so long as the horse is comfortable with this)
 
Sounds like it was possibly administered uunder the skin rather than into the muscle, did the lump rise as the vaccine was injected? This shouldn't normally happen. Is he uncomfortable/hot/swollen? It will probably disperse with time. Hot compresses and massage might help.
 
Going back to vets Fri. Lump still same size, no heat but rock hard n right in line btn mouth n my hands so reins may now rub it. Was hoping it'd disappear but no luck so far. :'(
 
Vets are going to operate on my poor boy next Tues to remove lump, he will be scarred but at least he will be able to be ridden again after a week or two. He has arthritis so to leave the lump & retire him is not an option as he needs to keep moving if possible. Vets have been fab & drug co are paying the bill.
