My pony (aged 20) is on loan to a riding school and he has just had a seizure or fit last week after completing a clear round jumping. He was tied up, still tacked up and reared, with his eyes going white, and fell over backwards. Luckily the saddle seems to have saved his back. He wasn't tied there long before it happened because the kids were watching each other jump, thank goodness because he might have fallen on somebody, so he hasn't been left for hours and one of the staff was watching all the ponies. When he got up his temperature was sky high and his heart was racing. The vet eventually arrived 2 hours later and he was back to normal. I wanted my vet to check him over and take blood tests to see if there was any underlying cause ie liver failure but all the tests have come back normal, he is just the same as normal, no back problems after his fall. We tried to figure out what could have caused this and it turns out that he has had his first strangles injection on the 31st March, the only different thing that has happened. The company who makes it has said that this has never happend before but I don't believe the companies that make the vaccines especially when it was taken off the market in 2007 and only recently put back on the market. I have been researching on the internet and it says that there could be a reaction up to 3 weeks after, which are sore lips where the injection happened and a high temperature. Has anybody else known of any complications with this vaccine? He is due his second one this week and personally I don't think that he should have it.

No way, why did he have it, and have you searched for a similar posting?

Yes I wrote how all the horses on our yard who had been vacinnated with the strangles vacine before it was taken off the market had high temperatures, were really down and depressed, not eating, listless, and just generally fell ill. We had one horse who suffered an enlarged heart as a result of the vacine and the manufacturers admitted liability and paid her vets bills after her horse needed an ECG and numerous visits by the vet.

Our vet said he would never use the vacine again.

Could it be that the vacine has enlarged the heart adn this is what caused the fit?

Thanks for the replies. I think that the horses and ponies all had it due to the fact that there are a lot of equines there plus liveries. That's interesting regarding the enlarged heart and the high temperature but the vet checked his heart and it was normal, infact everything was normal.

Mine has had a severe reaction to strangles vaccine including a muzzle abbcess which burst spraying pus about so I am quite well up strangles vaccine now but I have read and heard nothing along the lines of what you describe . I also think its too long after the injection the ones I saw reacting did so within hours of the jab.

Just found out that they have the vaccine due to competitions taking place there and also when they go to comps. but my friend has been to Hickstead, Horse of the Year etc and never been asked to have it. Also, again I have found out that one of the ponies died after the injection. Yes it was 36 years old so why give it the vaccine in the first place. It could have been a coincidence but two reactions! My vet said that it is a fashion thing and she wouldn't use it as a preventative only as a treatment.
