Poor stuck horse had to wait for rescue simply because the breach bar was fixed. Never been keen on that idea and seeing this has confirmed it. Also confirmed the need to have a good toolkit with you when you travel.

My breach bar is not fixed but I am interested in what you think needs to be in a good tool box? All I carry is WD 40 and my tyre pump and pressure gauge!

I have had a pony who has travelled in a trailer all his life decided to limbo under the breech bar and get stuck. Fortuately for me he didn't panic and we had a hammer to get the pins out.
All trailers should have knuts or pins that can be accessed from the outside of the trailer so you should carry the the allen key/or spanner to fit them. I carry a screw driver set/hammer/and spanner in my tow car.

Adjustable spanner, tyre iron, screwdrivers, knife and rope at the least.. Got us out many a fix..

I just watched that, poor horse.. I wondered if it was anyone off here..

They also took a call about someone on their way to hospital after their horse fell on them.. Hope that's nobody from here either..
They also

Am adjustable screwdriver and spanner in case you need to take something apart, never thought about it until i just watched this programme.

Other than that wd40, air pump, tights, electrical tape, bungee cord and gaffa tape.

Ok, maybe I should also ask what certain things are for....tights? Bungee cord? ( though I have that anyway to hold my water container in) spare baling twine and lead rope are always in the trailer too..

They undo for loading and unloading in an IF but you can't undo them if the horse is stuck over them because the wieght of the horse prevents this this happened to my friend and they had an Allen key and where able to release it with out the horse suffering serious injury.

Ahhh ok so we just mean a standard BB then? I was wondering what type of trailer we were talking about.
Great post, I never knew this and will get the appropriate key for my ifor :)

Equitreks AFAIK don't have breech bars (behind the horse) they do however have breast bars (in front of the horse).

OH is a firefighter and gets totally frustrated with their H&S poilices, such as he's been taught to NEVER approach a horse from the RHS as it will freak out, because it's used to being handled from the LHS lol... but what bothered me about that clip was the ropes the firefighters were using, I assume so they could be dragged to safety? But all I could see was danger if the horse got tangled in the ropes and panicked they would have been in grave danger?? Have posted the clip onto the wall of the horse rescue FF on facebook to ask if this is standard procedure

My mare 16.1hh got over breech bar recently , lucikily very good people made me aware and helped, it is a Ifor 506 and always carry Allen key and wheel wrench with me, also she was cross tied and bungie ties under throat some was holding her but made sure she was out before we finally dropped her, took her several hours to calm down but fine now.now cable tied wrench and allan key to left side of jockey door and was advised to squash her up tight as have less room to jump.

Ive got an equitrek and tbh, while a fixed breast bar isnt ideal, id only worry if i was carrying a poor traveller or a horse who'd never travelled before.
If you put it into context, its not an everyday occurrance, i like my equitrek have had it for years and never had a problem.
I do hope the horse on the programme is ok .

my friends horse did this in our trailer and jumped the breast bar and we undid it from the middle and the roof and dropped it down so we could undo it. as long as the horse is monitored and the tool kit is avaliable it is relatively easy to deal with as long as the horse doesnt panic

Mine had travelled lots but usually with a partition in and another horse other side and is 13 so not a youngster never 100 per cent trust any animal but then dont like tying to trailer as have. Visions of them pulling loose and escaping.

Do people mean BREAST bars.

How on earth does a horse get caught up on a breach bar whilst the ramp is up?

I am confused.com

As I said in the thread I started, our Equitrek at work, a lorry not the trailer, has a quick release panic pin, but we don't use the breast bar unless we are travelling two yearlings the 10 minutes down to Tatts. We travel everything else in a 'tube' that we have had constructed, the mares are not tied up and the foal has plenty of room to get out of the way. I think people do need to be aware of this issue. I was surprised that a horse would do that in an equitrek, given that there is only a smallish gap between the bar and the wall, think of those small horseboxes with a massive gap, fix breast partition and a window at the back, they really worry me for this reason. I have seen a horse get stuck like that on an IW trailer and thankfully we found an allen key before the horse had been there too long. Mind you how many IW owners even know about that?
