Are they a thing of the past or am I just stuck in a romantic notion due to my pony of a lifetime being a roan and no one matching up to her?
In my soft old age I fondly remember Vimto being called Vimto as she was practically purple! A lovely dark coloured face and a body that turned blue when clipped and not just because she was cold!

She had a head that as I have said was almost purple-well a dark burgandy.
Now adays while looking all I can find is wishy washy ponies!
So are they a thing of the past or am I just a bumbling old fool?

friend has just sold her strawberry roan 14.2 - she's 16 yrs old so maybe they're not about so much ....

I always understood the colouring came from Welsh x arab mixes (correct me if I'm wrong) which made fab jumping ponies but quite busy.... maybe they're not being bred anymore?

A strawberry roan is a roan over a chestnut base coat. You can have a roan over any colour base coat - e.g. black roan, bay roan, palomino roan etc. The head is always a solid colour, though may have a few stray white hairs.

So the colour of the roan depends on the colour of the basecoat. A dark burgundy head... maybe she was a liver chestnut roan? My liver chesnut can look almost purpley at times too.

She was a sec c.
A proper 'old school' sec c bred by a family who had been in the business for 50 odd years.
A bit of me thinks that I may have deluded memories of her LOL
(my memories never include the time she drown me by rolling in the water while going XC or the time she bolted when she saw a wedding car decked out in horse eating white ribbon

Hmmm I've seen more roans in the last five years than ever before.......

Not seen a really pinky strawberry roan in the flesh for about 15 years though.

On our yard we have a black roan, two grey roans, a bay roan and a chesnut with ticking. We used to have a proper blue roan too.

In my youth I had a chestnut roan pony and my friend had a strawberry roan and we adored them! However these days people seem very confused as what colour these are as you may have gathered by the conflicting comments!! You will commonly see roan colours in the Welsh breeds (and there still my favorite colours)! May have somthing to do with the fact my pony was the BEST!!

Now on her WPCS passport she was down as a strawberry roan???
Nerys3 yup Vim was welsh, roan and truly one of the best!!!
Sadly her breeders have long since halted breeding so I can't even find a relative!
Do we like a particular colour as we associate it with a great period of time?
As I have said I probably have romantic notions but long hot days with just Vim for company have left an ideal in my head that strawberry roans are the way to go!!!
Now, if I could just find a 16.2 version....or maybe I should stop trying to relive my childhood!!

I think we do - I have loved duns ever since a particularly fab pony I used to ride (not mine, sadly) many years ago. Showing, dressage, eventing, hunting, all PC activities - truly amazing pony. Having said that, I have never met a bad dun!

Although strawberry roans and chestnut roans are chestnut baised they are totaly different colours - do not confuse the two. Chestnut roans have orange legs and strawberry roans have very deep red/liver chestnut legs.

I have one. In summer he is definitely pink! He is also 16.1hh. Most roans seem to be ponies...
And of course you want to see pics right?

nerys there are loads of shades of chestnut so there are going to be lots of shades of 'chestnut roan', well that makes sense to me. I think we should just call them by the base colour and then add roan it would be easier!

the big horse posted looks more like what wiki calls a roan mimic, ie varnish roan coming from appy etc coat patterns rather than true roaning

The thing i get confused about is when you see a strawberry roan and the owner insists its a pink blagdon. come across two of these, whats the difference??

Hahaha, neither had I til these two people seemed to take offence when I said strawberry roan! Mind you, one of these people appeared to have her nose turned so far up she couldn't see where she was going lol!!!!! xxx
