I have been given a budget of £5-600 by my wonderful mother to buy a new saddle for Mr Arnie (currently loaning one from a friend as he slimmed out of his original saddle!) I have decided to wait a little longer until I buy so I can be more sure of a long term fit (those of you that have seen our journey know he was a porker and has lost a lot of weight already and I want to make sure he has built the main musculature)

Long winded way of checking if this is a realistic budget for a 2nd hand saddle fitted? (And any recommendations for Harrogate area??)

Are you wanting leather? You can get any synthetic saddle you like for that price and ones that look like leather with a changeable gullet.
If your after second hand then your budget should be fine. I sold my ideal working hunter saddle recently for £450 and it was about £800 new. I'm not from your area but try and find a saddler who has a lot to bring out for you to try.

Thanks for reply, yes I would prefer leather (I think) I think I am just worried about getting someone out and not being able to afford what they have on offer :o

Definitely recommend Saddles Direct. Got an Ideal Jessica dressage for just over £500 and it is in absolutely immaculate condition.:)

Yup my leather saddle was 400 second hand - I emailed the saddler about a synthetic and told her my budget so she also brought along the second hand ones that she thought might work for him. In the end I never even tried the synthetic ones on!

Any local saddler should have some nice GP saddles for £500. I have a really nice Barnsby jumping saddle for sale, used a handful of times, as new condition for £550!

It all depends on how easy to fit you and your horse are - I fit tricky wide flat horses and ponies and they often have tried and tried to search out slightly cheaper saddles, had several fitters out, and end up losing more money than if they'd spent more on the right saddle in the first place.

However, if you have a more straightforwardly shaped horse, and you are not hard to fit yourself, then you have a good chance, it's not a bad budget at all. If you can wait for the right saddle to become available then you also have an advantage, it's all about stacking the odds in your favour when you're looking for a used saddle.
